Commercial Description:
Our version of the "wee heavy" ales from Scotland. A blend of five different malts and an extra long boil give this beer its full body and deep red ruby colour. The low hop rate allows for a sweeter tasting brew that's suitable to fend off the winter chill.

Bottle. This is red amber in the glass with a thick foaming head. There’s molasses, smoke, black licorice, toffee, brown bread in the aroma. Mouthfeel is thin. I taste black ju-jube candy, winter spices, caramel, water.

Pours reddish brown with a tan head that quickly dissipates to a thin lacing. Mild smoke and worn leather aroma, toffee malt dominating the flavour. Smooth with good drinkability

For a full flavoured, full bodied beer, it is very drinkable. Nice clean finish leaves you wanting another sip. Deep ruby colour with very little head. Not much aroma, slight sweet malt/metallic. Nice earthy caramally flavour. Very smooth. Cheers!

Very dark pour of a deep red. Weak scent (though was in a crowded pup) A bit of spice and malts. Bitter rush immediately on the tongue that fades fast. Either boozy or spicy on the tongue, leave a bit of a burn. A touch of earth malts in the finish. A very good ’local’ draft.

on tap at Cafe Volo dark red/amber color. right off the bat, I can smell the alcohol, with a touch of caramel, and malt. flavour is rich, and malty, with some caramel in there. A nice offering, one of their better beers for sure.

[181-20070106] 341mL. Medium leathery aroma with light grassy straw, plastic and noticeable alcohol. Clear, deep ruby red body with a few random bubbles and a quick light brown foamy head. Flavour has medium meaty quality with something earthy and a light bitter background in the aftertaste. Medium-full body, a bit astringent. Lovely colour and togetherness, repeatable.

Bottle from Amsterdam outlet @ Bathurst & Lakeshore, Toronto. This may have replaced my previous Amsterdam favourite, Nut Brown, upon my first taste. Pours a dark ruby copper, light off white head. Light on the nose with floral notes, belies deeper tastes to come. Hints of Chocolate, cherry, very smooth tasting compared to the harshness and variability which sometimes accompanies different batches of Nut Brown (the acetoney curse of the amsterdam line!). Extremely even throughout in comparison. Evokes some hint of smoke and peat in the back of the mouth with toasted nuts and caramel. Low on the hops as per the company line, could possibly stand a bit more - it has the range to absorb it nicely. Viscous coating mouthfeel which clears quickly leaving the floral and sweet notes detected on the nose. Overall extremely pleasant for the darker faire from Amsterdam.
