2.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 ncube (18) - - JAN 27, 2012
Smells better than it tastes. Looks appetizing - rusty red. Malty, tangy and kind of sour. Medium bodied. I’m not a huge fan of this. Is it just me or do a lot of Amsterdam beers have an odd estery tang to them? I’m not a fan.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Spab (1114) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - DEC 6, 2011
500 ml bottle from brewery’s retail store (as Wee Heavy). Pours a clear dark amber colour with modest-sized virtually white head. Aroma is caramel and a bit of dark fruit. Flavour is caramel, dark fruit and a little nuttiness. Lightly carbonated.

Bottle purchased at the Amsterdam Brewery. Pours a dark reddish copper colour, head is off white and disappears fast, no lacing really. Aroma is a touch malty but I’m not getting much else. Tastes bitter and a bit of whisky almost. Not bad, not there best.
2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 Lubiere (6707) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - NOV 10, 2011
As Wee Heavy: A lightly hazed brown ale with a thin off white head. In aroma, a musty nutty aroma, with caramel, light off notes. In mouth, a nice caramel malt with off notes. 6.75$ for a pint, Smokeless Joe’s, Oct. 30 2011.

Deep amber-brown pour. The aroma has a bit of malty sweetness. A bit of soft sweetness and some light treacle aroma. Decent balance, although I’d like to see a bit more complexity through the middle of the palate. Not much in the way of yeast contribution. It’s decent, but not entirely awesome.

500ml bottle from the Amsterdam retail store. pours clear light brown with a quick white head. alcohol and dark fruit nose. the flavour is similar to the nose. the alcohol is far to present and takes away from an otherwise decent beer.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 jimmay (701) - Waterloo, Ontario, CANADA - JAN 8, 2011
500 ml bottle. Rebranded as Wee Heavy, cool scotty dog and tartan logo. Pours deep copper in colour with moderate off white head. Aroma and taste are sweet, caramel malt, with a hint of earthiness. Hops not noticeable. A little light on alcohol for the style, but I loved this. Very drinkable Scotch Ale!
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 DerWeg (1251) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - DEC 21, 2010
rich clear red-brown pour is capped with a tan head. Aromas are a bit earthy, mineral and lemon with some alcohol, perhaps a hint of brie cheese, leather? Strange style demands quirks. Taste a pretty delicious meld of malts, with lovely sweet-acidic cherry and other fruit, gorgeous toffee, lemon, some peppery spice, warming alcohol. I’m actually a little carried away by this one. A 500ml bottle from the plant that makes Amsterdam beers, and I will be buying more of this well worked-out recipe. Points for Amsterdam doing something drinkable besides the Framboise wheat ale. This Scotch Ale has nice toasty, warm, nutty malts, a good presence of alefruity tones, hops smoothed into the package very british-style. I like. Couldn’t really see it well at the bar but it’s dark and relatively opaque with a whisp of head and fine carbonation. Quaffable and relatively satisfying, a nice suprise really from Amsterdam (good rec G!)
