We tried a bit more after the tasting and I was still impressed. Woody and earthy, caramel and slightly smoky. Very smooth and refreshing, unique and quite nice. shintriad (698), Toronto, Ontario, Canada

A bit vineous up front with hints of cherry, woody, toasty and caramel flavours with a somewhat smoky finish. A bit of that signature metallic Amsterdam profile and harsh carbonation, but it’s tempered by the sugary malts and high alcohol. Not bad at all. Sammy (3993), Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Bit dark colour, not much head, not as dark as I have seen this style. Some malty aroma mostly, a bit floral. Taste is Ok but aggressive carbonation. Less than medium mouthfeel. Scotch mixed with malt and nothing special but quaffable. blankboy (3204), Toronto, Ontario, Canada
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Feb 15, 2007 Bottle courtesy of HogTownHarry. Pours a clear bubbly ruby-copper with a small diminishing creamy off-white head. Mild aroma of metal (or "bottle") and faint sweet malt at first, then after a few minutes, the toasted caramel malt started to come through along with some nuts and the unpleasant "bottle" smell subsided. Sweet and watery flavour of caramel malt, faint hops and not much of a finish, pretty bland actually. Some nuts and chocolate show up in the flavour but barely and I’m not getting any of the peat or smoke that some are. Light to medium bodied. It’s decent enough and one of the better (if not the best) Amsterdam beers but that’s not saying much, ultimately it’s a somewhat poor attempt at a Scotch Ale. It poured deep chestnut, with ruby red hues and a beige frothy cap. Well laced glass. Slightly charred nutty aroma leads into mild brown sugar and roasted malts/rye bread. The flavour profile is something of burnt sugars and toasty rye bread, heading into some semi-sweet caramel, fading into some smoke and perhaps peat. Finishes quite chalky, and perhaps a touch thin for the weight. Still a pleasure to drink. Radek Kliber (3943), Toronto (Can) Krotoszyn (Pol), Ontario, Canada

| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Jan 29, 2007 Bottle. Ruby tinged dark brown body pours with a big billowy chocolate head that disappears as fast as it rises. Aroma is fairly muted, notes of caramel malt. Sweet caramel malt flavour, light earthy notes and a malty tang. Earthy chocolate-cocoa notes linger in the aftertaste. Palate is slightly above average, and on the thin side for the style. Pleasant but lacks the necessary gravitas. DougShoemaker (2856), Toronto, Canada

Aroma is caramel, with a hint of peat, deep clear copper, pours a small tan head. Good malt taste to start, fine caramel too. Sweet, smooth, balanced. Good.
