Sammy (3934), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Feb 20, 2007 On-tap at Smokeless Joe’s. Bit dark colour, not much head, not as dark as I have seen this style. Some malty aroma mostly, a bit floral. Taste is Ok but aggressive carbonation. Less than medium mouthfeel. Scotch mixed with malt and nothing special but quaffable. Gentle, light aroma, malty slight roast character.6+
Pours brown, clear with dark copper, fine creamy top.
Medium light bodied with average dark roast. Sweet brown malts in the middle . Good ale.
HogTownHarry (3922), Toronto (Harbourfront), Ontario, Canada Dec 10, 2006 Bottle (341ml - clear *sigh*). Purchased fresh from the brewery. Poured lively clear bright ruby with a large foamy-creamy-sticky-topped tan head - lovely (4+). Aroma is pretty standard sweet lightly toasted malt and some light grassy hops. Taste ... pretty tame - grainy malt, dry weedy hops, bitter finish, not enough malt. Dry, astringent, light bodied mouthfeel, not much alcohol character, slight hint of chocolate malt in the aftertaste ... beef this up a little and you’ve got a decent scotch ale - as it is, while there’s nothing WRONG with it, it’s somewhat lacking in memorableness. Still one of their better brews, of course ... jerc (3861), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jan 29, 2007 Bottle. Ruby tinged dark brown body pours with a big billowy chocolate head that disappears as fast as it rises. Aroma is fairly muted, notes of caramel malt. Sweet caramel malt flavour, light earthy notes and a malty tang. Earthy chocolate-cocoa notes linger in the aftertaste. Palate is slightly above average, and on the thin side for the style. Pleasant but lacks the necessary gravitas. blankboy (3165), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Feb 15, 2007 Bottle courtesy of HogTownHarry. Pours a clear bubbly ruby-copper with a small diminishing creamy off-white head. Mild aroma of metal (or "bottle") and faint sweet malt at first, then after a few minutes, the toasted caramel malt started to come through along with some nuts and the unpleasant "bottle" smell subsided. Sweet and watery flavour of caramel malt, faint hops and not much of a finish, pretty bland actually. Some nuts and chocolate show up in the flavour but barely and I’m not getting any of the peat or smoke that some are. Light to medium bodied. It’s decent enough and one of the better (if not the best) Amsterdam beers but that’s not saying much, ultimately it’s a somewhat poor attempt at a Scotch Ale. Aroma is caramel, with a hint of peat, deep clear copper, pours a small tan head. Good malt taste to start, fine caramel too. Sweet, smooth, balanced. Good. tupalev (2605), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jan 15, 2007 Bottle from the brewery, thanks Harry. Thin dark brown, wisp of a carbonated off white very bubbles head. Malt - sweet aroma - very mild. Decent taste - lots of up front malt sweetness, some hops as well but it completely finishes where the middle should be - weird. Your left with simply nothing after it - just a watery base liquid. Starts pretty solid but finishes so watery. Not bad for these guys, but in the grand scheme of Scotch Ales, not even close. mabel (2530), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Feb 28, 2007 [181-20070106] 341mL. Medium leathery aroma with light grassy straw, plastic and noticeable alcohol. Clear, deep ruby red body with a few random bubbles and a quick light brown foamy head. Flavour has medium meaty quality with something earthy and a light bitter background in the aftertaste. Medium-full body, a bit astringent. Lovely colour and togetherness, repeatable.
