Day after Amsterdam Tap Takeover, at Bar Volo. Sweet beer, more like a sweet stout. Orange citrus. Somewhat astringent. Not on the mark. Some chocolate malt. Closer to an English Mild in taste. Some astringency in the aftertaste. On cask.

Bottle from LCBO. Aroma of dark fruits and light toffee. Sweet grape taste, some toffee, smooth with a sweet finish. Surprisingly good - well dine Amsterdam.

[5919-20131011] 500mL bottle. Toasted grainy wood aroma has a light chocolate dusting. Clear, brown dark red body with a quick foamy off-white head. Sweet portly roasted bread and coffee-infused wood barrel flavour. Full body. Delicious, great balance, aptly named. (8/3/9/4/16) 4.0

Slightly muddy moderate brown. The aroma has caramel, a little toffee, not much going on. The palate has more life - stewed fruits, alcohol spice, toffee, light molasses, wood, let down only by a little bit of a thin finish.

Appearance - pours Coca-Cola black with hints of red catching the light. Thin off-white head. Nose - lots of mocha, chocolate and cherry hit the nose immediately. Palate - medium mouth feel, with some burnt malts, and mocha flavours. Light cereals. Very light booziness. Overall - this is very easy drinking for an 8.1 percenter. Finds a nice niche of not bitter, but not too sweet.

650ml bottle. Clear brown-amber body, small chocolate head with good retention. Aroma of rye toast, caramel, herbs, sour cherry, leather. Taste dominated by roasted malt, caramel, some dark berries, a touch of dark chocolate, and a strong boozy warming effect.

Strong, malty, firm but not cloying sweetness. Dark fruits and nuttiness. Licorice, fruity dark chocolate, and earth. Nice dark red-brown. Mild carbonation. Overall I wanted some more complexity, but not a bad beer.

Gorbalev (2950) - Ontario, CANADA - JAN 12, 2014
Bottle, Embrun LCBO. Very dark brown, frothy small tan head, amber notes. Earthy notes in aroma, dark fruit, hint of cherry. Some dark malt notes as well - chocolate, leather, even molasses. Body is thin to medium with low carbonation. Taste has that dark fruit, dark malt sweetness of a classic old ale, but tempered a bit - it is like they went halfway to a Hardy’s. Alcohol present and enough going on to make it complex but given the excellence of some of the Amsterdam big beers these days, I wanted more. Will age a couple to see how they do. Nice attempt.

Single bomber from the LCBO. Pours a dark brown colour with some light debris floating around. The head is nice and frothy with a beige colour, good retention and creamy-foamy lace. Big coffee nose at first pour, but the plum and other dark fruits come out. Eventually, it becomes rusty water over caramel. Silky mouthfeel with a nice little warming, but no burning. Roasted malt taste with some mild bitterness, hints of chocolate and light cereals. Goes down nicely and decent to try, but not something I would have again.
