I was very fortunate to be around when they made this at Amundsen. It is funny, Norway is so restrictive many ways when it comes to alcohol, but a Dane had to go to norway to remake a beer not legal in the EU. Funny (because of the tobacco added to the beer). I was also fortunate to taste the first version (the "real" one, and I must say I thought this Amundsen made version wasn’t quite in the same league, but that could be an age issue, I don’t know. I was given a taste of the very first test run of the original beer, and it was amazing. Anyhow, this was a good experience all the same, even if the licorice/anis covered up what could have been, Also, I remember it as being a bit sweeter than I may have wanted?

Appearance: Deep dark color with a tan head. Ok lacing.
Aroma: Dark malty, roasted malt and licorice.
Palate: Medium to full body. Slightly sweet and a moderate bitterness. Soft carbonation.
Taste: Fruity, mild spicy, a bit roasted malt and lots of licorice.
Overall impression: At last one of the rough snuff that is really nice.
Personal stats: On tap @ Havnelageret in Fredrikstad, Norway.

Sampled @Kongsberg Ølfestival 2013. Dark brown, low dirty blond head. Sweet ashy licorice aroma with spice and roast tones. Mid-bodied. Licorice-accented malt flavor. Ash, tobacco, som dark fruits and roast. Interesting, drinks good.

On tap at Amundsen. Complex, lots of grain and spices. Tobacco? Maybe. Liquorice more pronounced. Hazy brown, very drinkable.

Black in glass, thin tanned head. Smells of liquorice, roasted malts, some hints of diacetyl (which suits this beer quite well). Taste is medium sweet, liquorice and scruff, quite dry, not much yeast characters. Moderate bitter. This is really not my glass of beer; too weird and i’m not that fan of scruff. Still i have to say it has several interesting aspects. I think it’s cool that we again can taste this banned brew

On tap @ the brewpub. Dark brown, almost black body with a small, dense beige head. Pleasant aroma dominated by liquorices and some dark malt. Flavor is sweet, dark malt, some dry fruit, spicy, pleasant bitterness and quite much liquorices that becomes more dominating in the aftertaste. Fine and balanced body, smooth aftertaste. A nice beer on the sweeter side, quite smooth. I think this one is tasting closer to the second version from Midtfyn as the liquorices is more obvious than in the original version. A very nice beer anyway.
