COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Originally brewed at the Anacortes Brewery under the guidance of the visiting Brewmaster of Kalt Loch Brewery in Bavaria, this beer is modeled after a dark lager brewed by Kalt Loch for the Engelberg monastery. Our version uses Perle hops and a portion of apple wood smoked malt.

Amazingly good beer. Has a dark, porter-like color with a dark tan head. Sweet chocolatey tones all throughout with very little bitterness. I’ve not had this style befor but am now a big fan.

Draft @ Collins. Served near frozen! Warm deep dark brown reddish tint. Small head. Inky aroma. Cola notes. Retains a cola character throughout. Light medium body. Black licorice and slight anise from well made dark malt extraction, no roast. Chocolate. Chicory. I might prefer a little toasty character but its ok. Solid.

Dark, sasparilla color with faded pond scum head. Not much aroma, perhaps light carafa roast. Flavor strikes me as a munich dunkel rather than a schwarz. Munic malt, light roast barley, not tannic bitterness, carafa, mild grainy sweetness.
Earlier Rating: 1/31/2009 Total Score: 2.8
Dark bodied with an adequate, crisp layering of head. Brief whisk of carafa beneath the nose trailed by hints of hop bitterness. Medium-bodied, lacking roastiness desired from the style. Strong beery underpinning. Eh.

Taster – Washington Winter Beer Festival – Seattle, WA – A dark malty Pilsner with a deep rich flavor. This was a very nice beer. Tasty and a welcome change to the regular Pilsner

Pours a dark brown tone with a thin head. The aroma is full of dark malts that are pleasantly fruity and a little tart. Light roasted malts in the flavor combine with some dark fruit and a touch of tartness. Seemingly pretty light bodied and thin.

Supper dark brown with light off white head. Aroma was malty and smokey, almost peaty. Flavour was burnt toast with some caramel malts. Tasty deceiving beer.

Draft @ Strange Brewfest 07: Pours a dark black/mahogany hue. No head or lacing. Nose of light roast, dark pickled cherry and a touch of toasty caramel. The flavor is sweet with the same roasted cherry note. Tart, balanced, "lagery". The finish is watery as is the mouthfeel.

Draft at Winter Beer Fest. Pours a blackish brown with a tan head. This beer sorta took me by surprise. The taste is huge with nuts, chocolate, caramel, a trace of coffee and smoke. A lot tastier than any other Schwarzbier I’ve tried.

UPDATED: MAR 31, 2006 Draught at the brewpub. Near black. Roasty malt aroma. Medium sweet with clean mouthfeel. Tarry finish. There’s some interesting nuances underneath, but it’s too sweet and a little too hard in the mouthfeel for me to get down there and enjoy them.

Very dark brown colour. Aroma is full of subtle nuances - coffee, milk chocolate, tobabbo, nuts, with nothing dominating. Smooth body with chocolatey accents and a faint whiff of smoke (they use some home-smoked malt in this one, but it doesn’t factor in all that much). Sweetish accent, chocolatey finish. Well-balanced.
