Dark brown, nearly black with a patchy but elegant head. Smooth palate with a strong smoke flavor, lightly sweet. A touch thin but immensely smooth. graham515 (424), Houston, Texas, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jan 21, 2008 Pours a deep ruby brown into the glass with minimal head. Aroma is sweet with some fruity notes. Flavor is smooth and refreshing. Theres some taste of burnt sugar and roasted grain. The hops are present just enough to balance out the sweet profile of this beer. elelwarren (138), SF Bay area, California, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 12/20 | Jan 20, 2008 An interesting brew, insofar as it challenges the style’s boundaries to a huge degree. Very dark, almost opaque, with ruby highlights. One-finger, tan head. Aroma of strawberries & lemon. Flavor is much less sweet than most dark bocks. In fact, sweetness plays a marginal role in the set of flavors. Sour cherry, chocolate, burned toast, and citric hops are the main flavors, with a touch of dark toffee in the first third. The acidic quality does not feel like a bock, nor does the porter-like espresso bean roast. If you like porters, you will probably particularly enjoy this. troopie (866), USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jan 13, 2008 Bottle. Poured deep brown with thick tan head. Aroma of swet malt and chocolate. Medium body. Bittersweet chocolate and malt, a bit of roast. Toasty finish. Worth drinking when you find it. slugstout (18), Zig Zag, Oregon, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jan 13, 2008 Beautiful dark beer, bottle poured with thick, creamy brown head. Smooth + Tasty. Slight hop linger with minimal hop presence. Chocolate and cherries, what a delicious beer. beerinmarch (2781), Alabama, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Jan 10, 2008 I remember this beer differently, did they change the recipe? Now pours very dark brown, almost black, tall khaki head. Big meaty aroma, burnt chocolate, burnt wood, tastes like that old tale of "scaping the bottom of the kettles". Big flavor, earthy and hearty. redgold07 (308), Irving, Texas, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jan 9, 2008 Pours a very dark ruby color, slightly opaque, with a small off-white head. Aroma is of caramel, slightly toasted, and nutty. The flavor is toasty, of chocolate, caramel, nuts, and coffee. The mouth feel is a little thin for my liking... especially in such a malty beer. Overall, quite good... I personally like it better than the Steam... sorry.

| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 2/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jan 7, 2008 Pours very smoothly and flowing. A dark brown beer, with good moderately lasting tan head. Has a pleasant, sugary, malt aroma. It’s got the best malt taste of any malty beer i’ve ever had.
