Commercial Description:
Keg and bottle: Filtered.
First brewed in 2005.
Ingredients: Finest barley malts, wheat malts, and fresh whole hops.
Bock beer, released in celebration of the arrival of spring, is an ancient and mysterious part of the brewing tradition. Over time, the term "bock" has come to mean a beer darker and stronger than the brewery’s regular brew. This is the first time we have brewed a bock at Anchor Brewing Co., and we hope you will find it to be a rich and flavorful addition to our offerings. San Francisco’s Anchor Bock Beer is virtually handmade by the brewers of Anchor Steam® Beer, in one of the most traditional small breweries in the world.

Dr. Pepper body with a lasting ½ inch head. Nose-wood, dried cherries, lightly bready. Taste-bitter, grape, sawdust, light husk, flat cola, medium bitter on the back end, acorns, pecan, nutty, very little alcohol, high prickly CO2. Lots of nutshell, cola, not overly sweet, sticky, or biter. Nice very solid. Lingering bitterness costs it palate points.

Bottle, 355ml. A dark brown colour with a small head. Aroma of malt and cocoa. Taste is very malty with chocolate. Slightly sweet. A hint of hops and bitterness in the finish. Moderate carbonation. Yum.

Dark brown color. Smells of light toaste cocoa and tobacco, a little grainy in the nose as well. Thin and a bit fizzy on the tongue, a little light cream flavor in with some bark and some old grains. This one is certainly forgettable.

Bottle: Plentiful and thick head. A nice bock aroma, with hints of tobacco bitterness, lots of malty sweetness, some sweet chocolate and a touch of tartness too. In the mouth, this beer just seems bad. Starts out mildly chalky, with way too much tartness for the style and not enough malt. The tobacco qualities barely squeak out in the finish, but over all this beer was too tart and crisp. A sweet chocolate flavor does develop as the beer continues to warm, but does not every seem to overpower the tartness. Not a very good offering from Anchor...

This is a dark beer that almost glows red when held against the light. Small foamy beige head. The sweet malty nose seemed like grains in Coke. Malty beer with some dark bread, roast grains, burnt toast, and a hint of root beer sweetness. Some pit fruit in the background. The hops toward the end of the sip are very green, with pine and grass dominating the finish. The alcohol tastes more than 5.5%. Nice dark bock.

Very dark brown, with a tan head. Odd aroma--quite bitter, some metallic overtones, and carob. Flavor’s much nicer--fairly sweet, with some melanoid notes, raspberries, a dry nutty bitterness.
