Commercial Description:
Keg and bottle: Filtered.
First brewed in 2005.
Ingredients: Finest barley malts, wheat malts, and fresh whole hops.
Bock beer, released in celebration of the arrival of spring, is an ancient and mysterious part of the brewing tradition. Over time, the term "bock" has come to mean a beer darker and stronger than the brewery’s regular brew. This is the first time we have brewed a bock at Anchor Brewing Co., and we hope you will find it to be a rich and flavorful addition to our offerings. San Francisco’s Anchor Bock Beer is virtually handmade by the brewers of Anchor Steam® Beer, in one of the most traditional small breweries in the world.

This was a nice beer, with plenty of roasty malt, grain, yeast flavors. I wouldn’t say it is a spectacular beer, but I enjoyed the bottle I had.

I really like this beer. It pours a nice deep dark amber with a nice light brown head. Pleasant malt taste. A little sweetness and minimum hoppiness. Might be one of my favorite beers.

Darn good beer. Caramel and coffee notes. Ends with some balanced hoppiness. Starts smooth with excellent and strong aroma. Very good beer.

A dark brown pour with a red tint and a good tan lacing. An aroma of raisins or dates I’m not sure. A flavor of toasted malt with a very good bitter finish. Good carobnation with a bit of a thin palate. Overall good beer thin palate and not a very complex flavor but a good beer.

Bottle. Medium red / brown color with a small fair lacing off-white to light brown head. Aroma is moderate malty and yeasty, alcohol, roasted. Flavor is heavy sweet and moderate bitter (malty sweet) with a average to long duration. Body is medium to full, texture is oily, carbonation is soft to flat, finish feel is light to moderate alcoholic. Very nice :o))

Draught at Hop Leaf. Aroma was somewhat clouded by smoky bar conditions. Not overly strong nose. Very dark body. Clear with red hues when held to light. Yellowish, tan head. Creamy, different. Decent lace. Tastes higher than 5.5% but not in a harsh way. (It’s hard to have a harsh alcohol mouthfeel at only 5.5%). Dry and malty. Solid beer, but nothing spectacular. Too dry for my tastes.

Bottle. Pours a very deep, dark amber/brown. Smells surprisingly sweet--taste is extremely smooth. I can taste a very small hint of chocolate. Hmmm, some nuttiness? Beats some of the homegrown Texas/domestic bocks I’ve tried. Very drinkable.

I had heard that this was something special, but now that I’ve tried it I’m not all that impressed. Sure it’s well balanced, with some gentle semi-sweet malt notes, more grainy than anything, and some well blended hops, and yes it’s tasty, but nothing extraordinary. I’m sure I’ll enjoy all 6, but will probably forget about it soon after.
