Commercial Description:
Keg and bottle: Filtered.
First brewed in 2005.
Ingredients: Finest barley malts, wheat malts, and fresh whole hops.
Bock beer, released in celebration of the arrival of spring, is an ancient and mysterious part of the brewing tradition. Over time, the term "bock" has come to mean a beer darker and stronger than the brewery’s regular brew. This is the first time we have brewed a bock at Anchor Brewing Co., and we hope you will find it to be a rich and flavorful addition to our offerings. San Francisco’s Anchor Bock Beer is virtually handmade by the brewers of Anchor Steam® Beer, in one of the most traditional small breweries in the world.

Pours a clear brown color with ruby highlights and a medium diminishing tan head. Very nice aroma of red fruits (cherries, raspberries) with rich malt and caramel. The flavor is also very solid with a nice mix of cherries, raspberries, caramel and rich malt, the hops aren’t really noticeable but there’s a mild bitterness in the end. The body has a medium thickness with an oily texture and gentle carbonation. Anchor impresses me with this very enjoyable bock.

Bottle: Deep ruby, hues of brown sugar, moderate to large foamy head, light beige in color, very sticky lacing.   Bready aroma, immature plums, and dark malts on the nose.   Quite malty, bready, and very tasty.   However, this screams to me that it wants to be a touch sweeter.   Moderate body and mouthfeel.   Heavy roast malt finish, bready, but not as viscous I would have thought.   Needs to be sweetened up a bit.   Kinda comes across as more of an Ale than a Lager, if that makes any sense.   I applaud Anchor for doing a new beer.   A few changes and I think it would be splendid!   Thanks a bunch Ernie!

A small beige ring settles on top of a clear dark-ruby body. Aroma and taste is mainly raisins dipped in molasses. Raisins take over the molasses as the beer warms up. A little floury touch. Faint floral hops in the finish. The beer is very simple but could be quite effective if it wasn’t for the lacking body. A bit sticky and airy with a sparse carbonation. The end-result the type of nice but generic bock you get in half the of the USA brewpubs. As effective but also as innovative as a doorstop.

Very dark brown with a red glare. On top sits a medium-sized creamy, beige head. Rich, sweet chocolate aroma with some vanilla notes, more like an imperial stout than a stout. Liquorice as well. Flavours are still sweet with chocolate and liquorice, but the roasted flavours are more pronounced, leading up to a dry finish. Also some fruits in the background. Soft on the palate, medium-bodied. Strangely, the ABV is not stated on the label, but the brewery’s web site states 5.5%. All in all, a delicious, though slightly light-weight imperial stout.

12-ounce bottle. Pours ebony, almost black. Head is nearly tan but not quite, and it’s enormous and dense. Super dusty nose with some caramel and a whiff of roast lingering in the background. Very little flavor on the attack, but nice bubbles and malt backbone--butterscotch, toast, and vanilla. Especially in the finish with the vanilla. This beer doesn’t remind me of anything--even of a style, really--but it’s great.

Aroma of liquorice, and roast coffee, dark brown, red at the edges, pours a small toffee head. Flavour is roast malt, raisins, dark bread, woody, nutty. Medium bodied, very bitter, quite dry, tasty. Great.

12oz bottle. Dark amber color brew with light brown head. Sweet malt and molasses aroma. The flavor begins with a slight tart twinge that hits as the carbonation does. Then roasted malts and some brown sugar (maybe) fill in the rest of the flavor. As the taste ends the flavors kind of even out and dissipates.

I remember this beer differently, did they change the recipe? Now pours very dark brown, almost black, tall khaki head. Big meaty aroma, burnt chocolate, burnt wood, tastes like that old tale of "scaping the bottom of the kettles". Big flavor, earthy and hearty.
