Pours dark and coppery, boardering on full brown, but a shade or two lighter. Smells of rotting fruit, raisins and caramel. Taste is of overripe fruit, slightly nutty and bitter dark chocolate. Mouthfeel is thick and the finish is slightly bitter and lingering,

Very good beer although a little out of style with the roasty dryness of the beer. Poured with a beautiful thick bountiful tan head with lots o lace. Opaque brownish black. Very mild aroma. Thick body, satisfying. Had this from a bottle at The Bodega Brew Pub downtown La Crosse, Wisconsiin Usa

Bottle thanks to JohnC. Poured a rich, deep, clear mahogany with ruby highlights... medium cap of toffee headage. Nose grew on me as this warmed... with burnt caramel, lightly-smoked darker fruits, rum-soaked raisins, and cocoa.. along with woodsy hops. This was even better in the flavor department... with a chocolate and rummy-raisin sweet malt base accented by damp freshly-cut wood, molasses, and caramel. The finish was sweet and a tad smoky. Medium-bodied, sweet, and smooth... but a tad grainy on the back-end. This was an excellent beer and a pleasant surprise!
4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 doublebock (356) - California, USA - APR 30, 2007
Ruby red color, thin but frothy foam. Bready aroma. Smooth flat malty taste followed by nutty hopiness. Solidy hoppy pine like bite at the end.
4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 luckygirl (1221) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - FEB 9, 2007
Bottled. Beer is dark red-brown. Head is initially small, off-white, creamy-frothy. Diminishes quickly into a run and a surface mist.

Initially the aroma is quite earthy and engaging. Malty with light notes of toasted grain, toasted rye bread crust, chocolate and coffee; Hoppy with a bright note of moderate dried apricot and a light note of resin; Yeasty with a light note of basement; Tons of curious miscellaneous notes, which include a moderate note of dried porcini mushroom, light notes of tomato sauce, vinous balsamic vinegar, trace of top soil.

The flavor is moderately-to-heavily sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter. The finish is average, lightly acidic, lightly bitter, lightly sweet.

The body is medium, the texture is watery and the carbonation is lively.

Overall, very unique and engaging. Great balance of bitter and sweet, earthy and bright. Unusal notes in the aroma that are fun to discover.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Heathen (1243) - Wilmington, Delaware, USA - JUL 6, 2008
THOUGHTS: I never saw this one before. I used to shy away from Anchor, but recently found out how great their beers can be. This is no exception. A great beer, but probably even better in cooler weather.
TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured an extremely dark brownish red. It looked brown until held to the light, where it glowed red with an average-sized, kind of creamy, light tan head that mostly lasted and left excellent and thick lacing. The aroma was moderate to heavy roasted and burnt malt, light herbal hops, soy sauce, spices, a little dark fruit and light milk chocolate malt. The initial flavor was lightly sweet, acidic and bitter; while the finish was light to moderately sweet and bitter, lightly acidic and then sour right at the end with an average duration. There was tons of roasted and burnt malts with a hint of coffee and a little tiny bit of dar, sour fruit. Some soy sauce too. The medium to full body was creamy with somewhat soft carbonation and a moderate to heavy astringent finish.

Poured from the familiar squat 12 oz bottle, this smooth, sweet elixer is an exceptional dark bock that, again, is undeserving of its 84 percentile rating on this site.
I believe it loses points because it has a low hops presense.
Read the definition of what a Dunkler Bock is supposed to be!
sweet, malty, nutty, and low carbination allow this to be an extremely quaffable beer!

355 ml bottle

I tried this beer on August 21, 2007 at the ’Beer Bistro’ in Toronto. The beer poured dark brown into a tulip glass with a thin brownish head. The aroma was malty with hints of nuts and caramel. The mouthfeel was medium bodied, with sharp carbonation. The flavour was malty with hints of chocolate and caramel.

Poured a very nice dark reddish brown (I almost thought I was pouring a sweet stout). Head was soapy looking and aroma is a sweet roasted scent. Flavor was also lightly sweet with a roasted coffee aftertaste. Overall, very very nice, with elements of sweet stouts. Definitely will require future purchases!
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 arkurzynski (846) - West Bend, Wisconsin, USA - FEB 8, 2011
Deep brown with red hues and yellow-tan head. Great malty aroma, Munich malts, gingerbread, biscuit, dark fruit. Non-cloying, sweet malt with dry, roast malt finish that lingers. Medium body. A little more roast and dry of a finish than I usually like in a bock...but still a great showing.
