COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Keg and bottle: Filtered.
First brewed in 2005.
Ingredients: Finest barley malts, wheat malts, and fresh whole hops.
Bock beer, released in celebration of the arrival of spring, is an ancient and mysterious part of the brewing tradition. Over time, the term "bock" has come to mean a beer darker and stronger than the brewery’s regular brew. This is the first time we have brewed a bock at Anchor Brewing Co., and we hope you will find it to be a rich and flavorful addition to our offerings. San Francisco’s Anchor Bock Beer is virtually handmade by the brewers of Anchor Steam® Beer, in one of the most traditional small breweries in the world.

Well, the availability is a bit broader than as described. Here I am in Perth and the best grog shop in the country sold this one to me. Thanks IBS. Hey, I just had a look at the last rating (gidday Bob, here we are rating the same bloody beer in the same bloody city and we have never met, welcome back) and was about to moan about the lack of ABV details. The nose is good if not a bit of dried fruitiness with some harsh maltiness. Flavour is potentially fine but there is a degree of wheatiness that detracts from the body as well as contributing an unfavourable harshness in mouthfeel and flavour. Too thin overall (would like to comment in the context of the ABV) and somewhat lacking in all thos factors that make a beer great.

12oz bottle. Creamy pour...dark brown...tan head. looks rich. Earthy, piney, burnt aroma is fairly present and interesting...pine resin is the dominate smell. Somewhat reminds me of the OSA. The taste shows even more piney resin. nice creamy thick mouthfeel, finishes with serious resin. Not striking me in any way as a German beer. Maybe this is just left over OSA??? I’m not knocking it for not being German, rather I’m knocking it for being too much like OSA, which I really dislike for the most part...a beer that can honestly only be drank once a year in very small quantities isn’t a great beer.

Poured dark brown with a light brown head. Aroma is nutty and sweet carmel malt. Flavor is nutty with some dry coffee notes and slight orange notes. Finish is dry.

Sampled multiple times at the brewery during my tour of the place, 12sep2006.

Quite dark, turned sanguine red when exposed to the light. Very nice sustained half inch of head.
Interesting caramel malts, and as hoppy as a Bock can be.
Plenty of malt body and well dosed carbonation, it does have a bit of a vegetal taste to it, but I didn’t really see it as such a bad thing. Kind of like bitter rhubarb, and the malt sweetness tames the harshness of it. But it’s the finish that I didn’t like, as it was ashy, something I don’t like at all, at least not at this level.

Pours black with a thin white head. Smells of maple and other malty notes that are difficult to pin down. Taste is malty with almost no hop notes. A classic bock which is my problem with it, just don’t like bocks.

355ml bottle. Malty and sweet aromas. Pours dark brown, with thin tan head, nopersistent, poor lacework. Medium body and low carbonation. Taste is malty, some notes of caramel. Correct finish. Not my favourite Anchor.

On tap. Pours black with a tan head. Aroma of buttery notes, roast, and sweet malt. Flavor is sweet and quite fruity (strawberry in particular) with raisin and dark fruits. Too sweet and the flavor profile was not to my liking. 6/4/5/3/11 [2.9/5]
