COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Keg and bottle: Filtered.
First brewed in 2005.
Ingredients: Finest barley malts, wheat malts, and fresh whole hops.
Bock beer, released in celebration of the arrival of spring, is an ancient and mysterious part of the brewing tradition. Over time, the term "bock" has come to mean a beer darker and stronger than the brewery’s regular brew. This is the first time we have brewed a bock at Anchor Brewing Co., and we hope you will find it to be a rich and flavorful addition to our offerings. San Francisco’s Anchor Bock Beer is virtually handmade by the brewers of Anchor Steam® Beer, in one of the most traditional small breweries in the world.

Pours an opaque dark brown with a solid half inch of lasting light brown head that laces the glass quite nicely. Aroma is toasted malts, rich melanoidins, and quite clean. Flavour is rich maltiness, Munich malt, toast, bready, some brown sugar like sweetness, and slightly burnt grain with a dry finish.

Bottle shared by Bob, dark brown pour with a tan head. Aroma of dark fruit, chocolate and some malt. Taste is very similar, little bit of raisin/plum flavor in the finish.

Bottle 355 ml, BBE 11/2014. Pours dark brown in color with a fluffy tan head. Hmm, what, did I open a bottle of Anchor’s Christmas special ale instead of their Bock, as the aroma seems quite similar to that one with some mellow spicyness, dark breadyness and sweeter tones. Well this isn’t actually as spicy, more towards the bready maltyness with some sweeter notes as in finnish traditional eastern delicacy mämmi and a bit of some slightly burnt grains as well. Feels quite dry. A bit of burnt malty notes with sweet and dry brown sugar in finish. This is actually quite tasty with that burnt and sweet malty aftertaste. Lovely, this grows upon every sip you take. So smooth.

A - Dark brown with red highlights and a tight 1 finger head that mocha in color. Nice lacing. S - Bakers chocolate with big notes of dairy. Nutty, pecans, vanilla, dark toffee, sorghum molasses, T - Parallels the nose with cocoa powder and milk chocolate. Rich and nutty, sorghum molasses, muted brown sugar, dry brown bread, finishes nutty and dry. M - Good carbonation, light side of medium body. An interesting take on the style. Satisfying but I could only have one in a sitting. Serving type: bottle 12-31-2011

355 ml bottle bought at CitySuper in New Town Plaza, Shatin;

Clear deep blackish brown colour; Half finger head and beige foam which lasts for 90 seconds; Pretty Good lacing and notable carbonation; Nice fragrant aroma of roasted dark malt, with chocolate, light cream, sweet caramel, vanilla, plums, raisins and nuts; Very light sweet taste of light roasted malt, with dark bread, light chocolate, coffee, strong nuts, cream, very light liquorices, light alcohol, and hint of grass; Med to light body, slick and creamy palate; Taste profile is very nice slightly sweet dark malt taste - reminiscent of a basic Guinness FES - with strong nuttiness complemented by just the right amount of chocolate, coffee, cream and booze; Hoppiness is very light as expected for the style, yet light grassy taste and zapping astringency make a very soild presence and nice finish. Good!

Comments: This American take of Dunkler Bock is very well made and ‘just right’ in many aspects: slightly sweet, Dunkel nose is here but inoffensive to me, strong nuttyness, and right amount of chocolate, coffee, creaminess and booziness. Highly enjoyable, and if its taste can be a bit more sweet, it will be perfect. Highly recommended!
