3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. Pours a nice deep brown with a medium head. Malty, sweet aroma of caramel and chocolate. The flavor is similar - sweet, with a lot of chocolate, and a decent amount of bitter hops on the finish. Almost seems like a Doppelbock - a bock and a half, I guess. It’s not one of my favorite styles, but I enjoy this one.

An overly sweet and rather uninspired typical american styles bock. Not a fan at all.

2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
UPDATED: MAR 10, 2014 Appearance: very dark brown color around the edges when held up to the light, mostly just black otherwise, pours with a small tan head that dissipates quickly
Aroma: malty sweetness, syrup, molasses,
Taste: sweet, darker malt flavor, almost coffee like, some grain comes thru, leaves a slightly bitter aftertaste
Palate: leaves mouth dry, leaves bitter aftertaste, average carbonation, average mouthfeel, not too heavy and not too light
Overall: not a bad beer, almost like a watered down stout, I’d drink it again

3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
UPDATED: MAR 13, 2014 12 oz bottle poured into a snifter. First aromas off the pour are unleavened bread, candy sugar, a light note of berries, and a mild vanilla. As it settles, some notes of caramel show up and the berries turn more towards a light melon. Other notes I picked up on were a light coffee bean, raisin, and a fresh baked crusty bread. By the end, the dominant aromas are vanilla and malted milk ball with an undertone that’s herbal or grassy. The pour is a rich dark, caramel-cola color with a large, puffy brown head. The reduces down to a dirty, but abundant, frothy head that retains nicely and leaves a lot of lacing. A medium light malty sweetness is matched by a more full, but mellow, medium light bitter, with a background sourness in very light amounts. The beer has medium / medium-light body, with a thinner texture and an abundant amount of soft carbonation; although ever now an again a bit of seltzer prickliness would show up. The mouthfeel starts out with a strong, but mellow spruce-like bitterness that fades by the the middle of the sip, and more sweet chocolate malt / malted milk ball and a light sour grape flavor swells in to take it’s place. There’s also a seltzer-esque mutedness to the drink. The finish is herbal, floral, or maybe grassy with some citrus and pine in there for good measure. A pine note lingers in the aftertaste with a juicy, roasted coffee, burnt bread, cocoa, and a touch of the seltzer water quality. At first it seems like the aftertaste is going to linger for a while, but it ends rather abruptly and mostly clean after a short period of time.

To celebrate my 1200th rating on ratebeer I decided to have Anchor’s now retired Anchor Bock(replaced by an IPA). 2013 bottle so one year old from Sugaya & served in a snifter, it pours a dark reddish-brown that becomes a deep black in the glass with a thin brown head which dissipates fairly fast but leaves nice lacing. Lovely ripe plum, figs & port notes very fruity with dark malts. Medium bodied with a silky mouthfeel. The flavor is fruity cherry & berries, quite sweet with caramel & roasty malts in the finish. A delicious beer that makes me think of fruits dipped in chocolate or caramel. Too bad it is being discontinued but I can see how this beer isn’t a "trendy" style in the US.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
This one poured a lighter brown with a beige head. Aroma was nutty and caramel. Flavor was similar, with grassy notes. Smooth and unflawed but boring.

4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle 0,355L. Very dark brown colour with big, creamy, light brown head. I would expect strong malty aroma at bock style of beer, but strong hoppy aroma with grass and orange dominates here. Of course there is malty strong coffee and chocolate aroma, but somwhere way back in the background. Taste starts light acidic and become heavy bitter with long lasting aftertaste. Full bodied, oily texture and lively carbonation.
