COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brewmaster Mark Carpenter’s unique recipe for Brekle’s Brown—a tip of the hat to our first brewmaster—looks to both the past and the future. Mark’s special blend of roasted malts, inspired by the all-malt brown ales in Anchor’s brewing archives, gives Brekle’s Brown its coppery brown color and its unusual depth of flavor—richness and complexity without heaviness. For brewing and dry hopping, Mark has chosen a single, American hop variety called Citra. The subtly entrancing flavors and aromas of this distinctive new hop perfectly complement the unique maltiness of Brekle’s Brown.

An interesting beer which is driven by the citra hops. Malty hazlenuts with a bitter backend. Not tge best beer from Anchor but still solid from a brewery I love and had to pleasure to visit and tour

Got to go straight into the flavor with this one. Brekle’s Brown starts off tasting like toffee-coated hazelnuts and finishes with sweet tropical fruit flavors coming from the Citra hop(s). In between, you get flickers of chocolate, caramel, and brown sugar. As you’d expect, the nose has rich malt and a touch of bright citrus. The deep brown body and creamy, off-white head are just as enjoyable. Ditto for the smooth, refreshing mouthfeel. It’s pretty hard not to get hooked by this Brown Ale’s candy-like flavors... even if you don’t usually go for the style.

Poured from bottle into a pint glass Appearance – The beer pours a medium brown color with a billowy tan colored head. The head has a nice level of retention, slowly fading to leave a bit of streaky lace on the sides of the glass. Smell- The aroma of the beer is quite heavy of a sweet caramel and toffee aroma mixed with some light aromas of a roasted malt nature. Along with these aromas are some light nutty and chocolate aromas as well as a little bit of an earthy and herbal smell. Taste – The taste begins with a sweet caramel and toffee flavor with a smooth roasted malt flavor. These flavors create a base for the beer lasting to the very end. Along with these flavors so too comes some notes chocolate and some light hop flavors of pine and a little bit of earth. With a light nut that joins the taste at the very end one, is left with a smooth, moderately roasted, and sweet flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the slightly thicker and creamier side for a beer of only 6% abv. with a carbonation level that is slightly low. The thicker feel of the brew in combo with the lower carbonation give the beer a nice creamy feel and are great for the mix of roast, sweet, and nut flavors. Overall – A very enjoyable brown ale with a nice sweet roasted flavor. Quite enjoyable.

Poured from bottle. It is as described. Single hop and all malt brown ale. Shouldn’t dissappoint but may not enthuse.

Fantastic brown ale. Caramel and hazelnut smell. Reddish brown color and very smooth. Excellent brown ale.

large bottle served in a pint glass. Pours a very dark, reddish-brown with moderate size but thick tan head. The head soon dies down to a ring but leaves some splotchy lacing. There’s plenty of unexpected piney hops in the aroma, and a bit of this carries over to the initial part of the taste. The flavor, however, quickly becomes dominated by a fine dark malt flavor that lingers for a while. The dark malt is evident in aroma, just less than might be expected given the flavor. Hints of dark malt, molasses and citrus fruits in the aroma, and of toffee, coffee, roasted nuts and caramel in the flavor. M: clean and rather crisp for style, thanks to the extra hops and a medium or higher level of carbonation. Medium body. O: unusual, easy-drinking, and flavorful, with interesting and well-balanced flavors that change from the time this hits the tongue until the lingering aftertaste slowly fades away.

Very nice brown ale. rather thin head, wonderful caramel malty aroma, with hints of hops and fruits towards the end. Initial mouth is malty caramel wich ends quite hoppy. Palate is rather thin. Nice stuff.

Impressed with this brown ale by Anchor! Aroma is very nice with malt, roasted nuts, and some fruitiness present. Flavor is a wonderful blend of dried fruit, subtle hop, full roasted malt and caramel.

bottle @ Unibirra.
