3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 10/20
Bottle. Dark brown with toffee head. Creamy milk chocolate mouthfeel. Not as much of a chocolatey palate as I expected. Smooth caramel and malt flavor.
For a heavy brau this goes down quick and easy.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20

2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Bottle - Rosy cola-colored with a thin, foamy tan head. Nose is chocolate, rye bread, and a hint of coffee. A tiny bit of Citra dankness, but it’s muted. It’s a weird combo. Taste is more of the chocolate/rye bread maltiness, the light oniony dankness, mineral, and a bitter chocolate, slightly metallic finish. Finishes sourly bitter, with an odd yeastiness. Thin, fluffy, and well-carbonated. Just doesn’t come together well, and has an odd bitter yeasty note just like the Anchor Bock. I’m unimpressed.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Fresh bottle drunk in 2011
Sandy brown body, with deep mahogany and graham cracker hues. Clear with a moderate amount of off-white head that lingers around a cover.
Hoppiness in the nose is quite aromatic and intertwined pretty well with the lightly toasted, nutty and rather sweet brown bread meets light milk chocolate maltiness. Citrus and a touch of tropical fruitiness are certainly not resinous or overly aggressive, nor is the alcohol problematic. Quite simple, with a medium strength overall.
At first the juicy hoppiness really shines, lending notes of lychee and candied orange, nicely combining with the sweet chocolate-like maltiness. Things dry out, with some huskiness/crackeriness (great word, crackeriness) and the carbonation takes hold and breaks up the maltiness. As it warms and breathes, with most anchor beers, the body becomes loose and quite watery, the sweetness builds up on the finish and the beer loses a lot of its initial pleasantness. Still, this is a fine, drinkable brown ale with a well-done hop profile and ample bitterness.

3.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
12 oz. bottle - Pours deep reddish brown with offwhite head. The hints of caramel and chocolate are present, but most of the aroma is sweet, like syrup, but definitely malty. Flavors of caramel, roasted nuts, and a tiny bit of something I’d imagine refrigerated flowers to taste like. A hops after that lingers until the next sip. Good brown!

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20

3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Very sweet malty body, lots of caramel and dark fruits in taste. Enjoyable happiness. Decent beer, still maybe not my cup of beer, maybe a bit too sweet for my taste to be totally balanced.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Rating #949 - February 3, 2014 - Beer 3 in the @coopwinespirits February discovery bag. Dark brown pour with a weak bubbly tan foam that disappears quickly. Aroma is strong roast malts, hint of pine, lemon, reminiscent of Anchor’s christmas a little. Taste is bold earthy malts, with a piney lemon sweetness, dominant roast malt, medium hop character with a slightly bitter finish that is quite pleasant. Impressive.
