Brewmaster Mark Carpenter’s unique recipe for Brekle’s Brown—a tip of the hat to our first brewmaster—looks to both the past and the future. Mark’s special blend of roasted malts, inspired by the all-malt brown ales in Anchor’s brewing archives, gives Brekle’s Brown its coppery brown color and its unusual depth of flavor—richness and complexity without heaviness. For brewing and dry hopping, Mark has chosen a single, American hop variety called Citra. The subtly entrancing flavors and aromas of this distinctive new hop perfectly complement the unique maltiness of Brekle’s Brown.

Poured a dark hazy copper colour. The head faded quickly but left spotty lace. Taste is of caramelized malts and dark fruits with citrus hints. Rockin’ Beer. Best of class

Bottle in augusta with Wayne. Very good brown ale. Not hoppy at all but finishes clean. Will definitely look for this one again. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

355ml bottle at home, thanks to MarkoNm. Poured into a snifter, ABV 6% Deep red brown colour on the body, with one finger of light brown head siting on top, thick, with great retention. Medium lacing left on the glass. Lovely aroma of caramel, dark fruits and hops, some sugar too. Taste is very good as well, again burnt caramel, sugars, lightky roasted malts even, dates, prunes, a bit of hoppy bitterness on the finish and the aftertaste. Medium thick body with average carbonation, dry but also a bit sticky on the palate. Great beer, reallly liked it.

Bottle from the Best Damn Beer Shop: Started off with a thick pillow of foamed head that reminded me of Guinness Draught where as the liquid was a medium shade of brown. In the aroma, a buttery scent of lightly toasted malts in congruence with a nutty scent of nuts while all still having a scent of Anchor Brewing’s signature smell of beer. Also, reminds me of a very subdued aroma of Anchor’s Our Special Ale minus the spices. The flavor is well balanced between a touch of toasty malts and an earthy almost herbal taste of hops that suggest strong flavors of honey. What an amazing brown ale that didn’t disappoint from Anchor.

Bottle. Medium high creamy off-white lasting head. Clear dark brown body. Sweet roasted malt caramel cocoa aroma. Mild and sweet cocoa caramel nuts flavor on a solid roasted malt base. Fair level of hops bitterness. Low carbonation. Long finish. Normally I regard this type of beer as quite boaring. This one is, however, quite nice and a pleasant surprise as it is quite well balanced, not too sweet and has a pleasant alcohol level.
