Brewmaster Mark Carpenter’s unique recipe for Brekle’s Brown—a tip of the hat to our first brewmaster—looks to both the past and the future. Mark’s special blend of roasted malts, inspired by the all-malt brown ales in Anchor’s brewing archives, gives Brekle’s Brown its coppery brown color and its unusual depth of flavor—richness and complexity without heaviness. For brewing and dry hopping, Mark has chosen a single, American hop variety called Citra. The subtly entrancing flavors and aromas of this distinctive new hop perfectly complement the unique maltiness of Brekle’s Brown.

Very well balanced for my taste. Nice roastiness on a good mouth feel and the rich aromatic hop variety makes this one a delight.

The smell is very sweet of toffee, nuts and milk chocolate. The color is hazy brown with a beige head. Tastes like roasted malts, nuts, cocoa and burnt sugar.

On tap at Avenue Pub. Pours a dark brown with medium creamy beige head that lasts. The aroma is strong roast, dark chocolate, cocoa. Medium mouthfeel with nice roasted malts and chocolate with nice lingering sweet finish. Enjoyed this one.

From a bottle. Pours reddish brown with a huge beige head. Aromas are sweet malt, grassy notes, biscuit and plum. Flavors are malty sweet chocolate and stone fruits with bready tones. Dried fruit and malt in the finish. Interest balance between fruity notes and the more traditional maltiness of typical brown ales. Light mouthfeel. Anchor Brewing rarely lets me down. They’ve made another very enjoyable beer. This one is really tasty.

Dark brown beer with a beige head. Syrup, raisins, sherry on the nose. Watery body. Crispy mouth feel. Caramel and bread flavors. Some fruity roasted coffee. Tasty yet watery. Smells good but the taste doesn’t quite match the smell.

Bottle courtesy of Hydes. Clear, dark, reddy brown. Thin, sticky, lasting, clotted cream coloured head. Fusty banana. Toffee apple. Brown sugar. Taste is initially sweet. Then mostly dry spiciness. Chew on the palate. Finish is banana Toffo sweet. Never had this before. Is it supposed to taste like a Doppelbock? Anyway, it does.

Tap from Lazy Dog. Pours a transparent amber with a layer of off white head. Aroma of dark fruits and malts. Taste similar with enough balance between the sweetness and malts.

One of the best malt forward beers I’ve had. Really well balanced with plummy fruits and a light hop touch. In fact the whole beer has a lightness of touch that is very appealing. One of those happy misreads between aroma and expected taste! Slightly foamy palate but a minor gripe.

One finger head, light cherry brown. Nose has floral fruity hops, which translates nicely to the palate. Rich creamy body, tinge of bitter on the after taste. Really well done.

Brown reddish color with a small off-white head that keeps a small lace for a long time. Aroma is too complex and something different, I couldn’t identify besides caramel, malty and burned sugar, there are some fruits that I can’t remember, really amazing aroma! Flavor is quite sweet with the same notes as aroma but not too impressive, hints of caramel, burned sugar, citrus and again something else. Low to medium carbonation with a medium body and a sweet finish.
