Brewmaster Mark Carpenter’s unique recipe for Brekle’s Brown—a tip of the hat to our first brewmaster—looks to both the past and the future. Mark’s special blend of roasted malts, inspired by the all-malt brown ales in Anchor’s brewing archives, gives Brekle’s Brown its coppery brown color and its unusual depth of flavor—richness and complexity without heaviness. For brewing and dry hopping, Mark has chosen a single, American hop variety called Citra. The subtly entrancing flavors and aromas of this distinctive new hop perfectly complement the unique maltiness of Brekle’s Brown.

Bottle. Pours in dark ruby body with medium tan head. Aroma has nutty, caramel, brown sugar, pretty strong. Taste has high caramel sweetness followed with high earthy bitterness, pretty floral in the after taste with long bitterness finish. Light fruity with really toffee character. Body is medium, high carbonation.

Butelka. Wzorowe Browl Ale.

UPDATED: FEB 10, 2015 12 oz. bottle from BevMo. The nose reveals a bit of toasty caramel and citrus. The bready and nutty maltiness jumps out with subtle floral and fruity hoppiness taste in the background. The opposite of so many of today’s hopped up brews. The creamy light roasted malt and the citrus hops marry perfectly. Slight bitterness in the finish. Unique and tasty!

On tap - This is a really nice, flavorful brown ale that’s very approachable for the non-beer geek, yet still pleasing to us that are a little persnickity. The aroma carries a nice earthy quality to it, some choco-malt notes and a citrusy aroma that was there, but kept under wraps. Lightly nutty, earthy, cocoa and mild citrus notes in the finish round out the flavors on this quite nicely. I would definitely get this again.

Pours a clear, reddish brown with a medium, beige head. The aroma consists of caramel, nuts, earthy malts, raisin, and some mild chocolate. Its pretty subtle. The taste is has a heavy caramel and maple. There is some nuttiness, some impressions of cherry and raisin, with hints of chocolate remaining as well. The aftertaste is a sharp, potent dose of caramel with a bit of cherry, though it ends rather quickly. Medium in body, with a thick texture, and about average in carbonation. This isn’t my favorite style, but I’d be pretty happy drinking this again.

355ml bottle served in a pint glass. A: Pours a dark amber to brown color. Nutty. Formed a big, bubbled and soapy beige head. Medium retention and lots of soapy and lingering lacings left in the glass. Beautiful beer S: Strong caramel in the nose. Strong notes of toffee, wood, roasted malts and flowery hops. A bit bready too T: Sweet upfront, roasted malts, caramel malts, toffee, wood and nuts. An extremely malty beer. End is hoppy and slightly bitter. Balanced M: Light body. Medium to high carbonation. Roasted malts with a touch of hops in the aftertaste O: Good drinkability. Refreshing. Anchor quality [ BA Review @ 4/1/2013 ]
