Brewmaster Mark Carpenter’s unique recipe for Brekle’s Brown—a tip of the hat to our first brewmaster—looks to both the past and the future. Mark’s special blend of roasted malts, inspired by the all-malt brown ales in Anchor’s brewing archives, gives Brekle’s Brown its coppery brown color and its unusual depth of flavor—richness and complexity without heaviness. For brewing and dry hopping, Mark has chosen a single, American hop variety called Citra. The subtly entrancing flavors and aromas of this distinctive new hop perfectly complement the unique maltiness of Brekle’s Brown.

UPDATED: OCT 6, 2014 Poured from a 355ml bottle. Copper-colored with a frothy quick disappearing beige head. Aromas of citrus hops and a bit of caramel are clearly noticable.Tastes mildly bitter due to the present hops and a bit malty in the beginning, ending in a long lasting mildly bitter, creamy and sweet finish (caramel, roasted nuts). Bit of a lovely unexpected warmish mouthfeel also, regarding the 6% alc/vol. Full body, pretty creamy texture and quite mildly carbonated. Indeed, a great palate. Overall, a loveable well-balanced Frisco brew.

"makes sense...i really dig the citra hops, but didn’t pull them out of this beer specifically, i just liked the cool hop profile atop the light roasted malts. for a brown ale, this is pretty dang good. the girl at City Beer in SF said some of "the bloggers" thought it boring. they are hacks. it’s a brown ale! what do you want? speedway stout? for the style, it is very good. overall, a good sessionable brew with a nice light but complex flavor."

Bottle from Alko, Helsinki. Pours reddish brown with a medium-sized white head. The aroma is an interesting mix between malty and hoppy elements. It offers some bready and nutty maltiness and plenty of floral and fruity hoppiness, probably from the Citra hops. Taste is also very hoppy: floral, citrus fruitiness dominates with berries and pushes malty notes to the background. Some sourness and bitterness in the finish. The palate is medium-bodied with a moderate carbonation. All in all, not a typical brown ale, but an intriguing and original beer altogether.
