Brewmaster Mark Carpenter’s unique recipe for Brekle’s Brown—a tip of the hat to our first brewmaster—looks to both the past and the future.
Mark’s special blend of roasted malts, inspired by the all-malt brown ales in Anchor’s brewing archives, gives Brekle’s Brown its coppery brown color and its unusual depth of flavor—richness and complexity without heaviness.
For brewing and dry hopping, Mark has chosen a single, American hop variety called Citra. The subtly entrancing flavors and aromas of this distinctive new hop perfectly complement the unique maltiness of Brekle’s Brown.
Ingredients: Water, barley malt, hops.

A thin tan head on a hazy, brown colored body. The aroma is unique: roasted malt with a sharp pine injection. I like it. The taste is similar with a roasted/nutty malt background and a strong pine and lemon bitterness throughout. A crisp texture, moderate carbonation and medium body. It’s like a marriage of a brown ale and an IPA. Enjoyable.

Excellent dark brown pour with a nice tan head and some lacing. Aroma of Cita hops and a little spice. I’ve heard of this new hop variety but have never tasted it. Medium body with a lightly roasted malt and spice taste. Clean somewhat dry finish. An excellent brown ale.

33 cl bottle, Sheffield, UK via The Dram Shop. Medium brown, lighter appearance than cola. Balanced aroma, sweet caramel with floral hops. Medium body, sharp spice then a long building sweetness on the finish. Quite nice, very American in style compared to what I’ve been drinking recently.

Pours dark brown copper color with a foamy khaki head. Aroma is metallic roasted malt. Taste is bitter roasted malt with a hop presence and some metallic spice in the finish and some dark pitted fruit too. Palate is thin to medium and finishes dry. Decent beer that has a good roasty malt presence.

Roasted choco-caramel aroma. Clear yet heavy looking dark brown appearance with mild lacing. Oaty, malty taste with just enough contrasting hops. Foamy medium body, seems like a draught pour. Reminds one of old English style brown ales...only not the crap ones.

Decent brown ale. Better then Newcastle but not as good as Samuel Smith’s Nut Brown Ale.
