Brewmaster Mark Carpenter’s unique recipe for Brekle’s Brown—a tip of the hat to our first brewmaster—looks to both the past and the future.
Mark’s special blend of roasted malts, inspired by the all-malt brown ales in Anchor’s brewing archives, gives Brekle’s Brown its coppery brown color and its unusual depth of flavor—richness and complexity without heaviness.
For brewing and dry hopping, Mark has chosen a single, American hop variety called Citra. The subtly entrancing flavors and aromas of this distinctive new hop perfectly complement the unique maltiness of Brekle’s Brown.
Ingredients: Water, barley malt, hops.

12 oz bottle. Pours a copper brown with a very light haziness and a light tan head. Sweet brown sugar caramel aromas. Flavor is sweet with toasted biscuit, brown sugar, caramel. Cocoa hints. Clean finish. Nice, a darn good brown ale here.

Cherry brown color with light tan head. Interesting aroma...honey, hops, dark fruits and cinnamon/spice. Taste is much the same. Light body, taste tapers off too quickly.

Ruby/brown color with a big tan head. Aroma of roasted malts and hops. Taste of caramel, roasted malts, nuts and hops.

Is this going to be a good way to use Citra? Initial smell says yes, initial taste says maybe. Ah - Budweiser chalice - is there any beer that you can’t hold? No lights again and the shady natural light only gives this a farm reddish copper hue - totally clear with a medium sized tan bubbly head that fades slowly and leaves a sloppy mess on my high end glassware. I have a BBQ outside that never gets used. I might just roll it into the street tonight. Hopefully someone in a Lexus or jag rips around the corner like an idiot (like usual) and plows into it. A fitting end. Broil King grill - meet Escalade grill - a match made in heaven. Interesting sweet nose blend of toasted malts, toffee and sweet citrus candy. The citrus seems to be a mix of peaches and apricots. This smells really nice - something new. The taste is pretty different and I’ll say that this could appeal to a boatload of people but I’m not sold on it. Yea it’s good but I really wouldn’t want a second one. Buttery caramel, toasty malts and an annoying sharp bitterness with a dose of pokey citrus that doesn’t quite fit. It’s that lemon acidity that I don’t care for. It’s terrible warm!!! (only a mouthful).

Ughsmash (7428) - Pewaukee, Wisconsin, USA - AUG 5, 2012
Bottled. Poured clear ruby brown with a sticky yellowy-beige head. The aroma picked up redder fruits and nutty notes with earthy yeast and orangey hops around.. came across with a touch of sourness. The flavor found nutty and caramel maltage at the core, with tart orange zest and slightly-smoked cocoa around.. finished with nutty malts kissed by fresh citrus.. tasty. Light-medium bodied with very good balance through the palate.. very drinkable stuff.

Dark brown with a small head. Aroma is roasted malt, a bit of caramel and some spices. Cinnamon. Nutmeg. The flavor is mild and the mouthfeel is watery. Brown ales always seem to disappoint me by being too watery. Is it just me?

Great example of a brown ale, nice and malty. It pours a redish brown with a tan head that has good retention. Nose is all malt. Body is medium. The taste is pretty complex, starts off a bit crisp and then gets a little metallic and roasty. I really enjoy this one for its style.

Bottle. Interesting piney hop and sugary aromas, pineapple, plums. Dark translucent brown, creamy 1-2cm. head. Initial is dark brown sugar, and then the hops come slicing through sharply. Some metallic notes in mid. Light body. Very well-balanced beer. Drinkable, tasty stuff.
