COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brewmaster Mark Carpenter’s unique recipe for Brekle’s Brown—a tip of the hat to our first brewmaster—looks to both the past and the future. Mark’s special blend of roasted malts, inspired by the all-malt brown ales in Anchor’s brewing archives, gives Brekle’s Brown its coppery brown color and its unusual depth of flavor—richness and complexity without heaviness. For brewing and dry hopping, Mark has chosen a single, American hop variety called Citra. The subtly entrancing flavors and aromas of this distinctive new hop perfectly complement the unique maltiness of Brekle’s Brown.

35 cl bottle @ home. Pours reddish brown with an off-white head that fades leaving virtually no lacing. Aroma is caramel malt and nuts. Taste is much like the aroma.

This was an interesting brew for sure. Thanks again, Chipalsa for hooking this one up. I got plenty of caramel and nuttiness with some exotic fruit tones in the aroma. Taste mimicked the aroma perfectly, with caramel, some light chocolate, butterscotch aftertastes, and hints of passionfruit and guanabana. Such a refreshingly different brown ale.

Bottle
Appearance - Deep red, creamy lacing
Aroma - Grassy, hops toffee, bread
Taste - Grain, raisins, butterscotch, light hops

This beer was pretty malty and only a tad bitter at first. While it warms up the hops give a tart flavor - as if you’re eating a raisin granola bar that smells like butterscotch. I like this take on the style.

On tap at Big Star. Pours a clear deep caramel brown with a tan head that dissipates to the edges quickly. Aroma has a good amount of deep grains with a bit of light caramel and chocolate. Flavor is sweet with chocolate and dark grains with a hint of backing caramel.

from Bier-Bienne - cloudy brown beer with a little foam left; fairly malty and cookie-like aroma with a decent hop presence; good malt body and very tasty, bitter and long malty toasted finish

Draught@Euston Tap, London. Deep brown colour, small beige head. Aroma is nutty, dark fruity with some mild brown sugar and toasted notes. Flavour is nutty, fruity wooden, a bit nutty and also has some sugary notes to it.

pours a dark, clear, caramel colored brown with small, diminishing grey head. Aroma of caramel, soft molasses, brown sugar, roasted hazelnut. Medium bodied, smooth, with a nutty finish. Flavor of caramel with a soft, spicy hop presence, some nuts, ever so lightly bittered. Great session brown.

A clear brown body with a off white head that had good retention, but no lacing. Aroma had a nice floral hop profile and nice toasted malts. There was a subtle note almost like talcum powder. It wasn’t off setting or bad, it was actually interesting. Flavor was well balanced. Roasted malts dominated the initial flavor which gave way to a nice floral hop presence in the finish. Kind of light, carbonation was mild.

This was a very good brown ale. Pours a rich-enough brown, moderate carbonation. Very interesting flavor, with a maltiness, to be sure, but some fruitiness that slides into an orange (the "Citra" perhaps suggesting it to me) in the later finish. Subtle and complex, and about all I would want from a brown ale, without making it into a porter. Bottle.
