Brewmaster Mark Carpenter’s unique recipe for Brekle’s Brown—a tip of the hat to our first brewmaster—looks to both the past and the future.
Mark’s special blend of roasted malts, inspired by the all-malt brown ales in Anchor’s brewing archives, gives Brekle’s Brown its coppery brown color and its unusual depth of flavor—richness and complexity without heaviness.
For brewing and dry hopping, Mark has chosen a single, American hop variety called Citra. The subtly entrancing flavors and aromas of this distinctive new hop perfectly complement the unique maltiness of Brekle’s Brown.
Ingredients: Water, barley malt, hops.

Muddy brown with medium head that builds with little agitation and leaves ample lacing; brown sugar and molasses with citrus aroma; hops upfront... Not a mild brown but a hop forward one. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

12oz bottle. Pours a clear and very dark brown with a loose tan head and light stringy lace. Nice rich brown bread and molasses nose, showing just a tiny twang of aluminum. Creamy medium body with light but pleasant carb. Rich toasty bready mid palate with some very light molasses notes, but overall very clean and thoroughly attenuated. Light brown bread finish.

Bottle from Yamaichi. Nose of brown sugar, caramel, chocolate, light spice. Deep brown witha tall, fine head. Sweet, malty, thick.  Fruity, like raisins or grapes. Yeast character is a bit strange. A bit thin. Ok, not so special though.

Tap. Pours dark brown with average, fizzy beige head; short retention and minimal lacing. Aroma is caramel malts, floral hops, figs, dates, and light nuts. Flavor is mostly sweet malts, with some dry wood notes, light hops, and faint fruit esters; dry finish. Light body and low carbonation.

Tap pour. Mahogany color little bit of cream head.warm malt nose. Taste is mild like a good Oktoberfest, picking up warmer malt notes in the back with a hint of today.Light hoped on the backend cleans the palette.excellent, very drinkable fall beer.

UPDATED: SEP 24, 2012 Beautiful reddish-brown with a rocky foam on top. Odd aroma includes some bright fruity hops which follow into the flavor, but both aroma and flavor favor the malt. Dry and toasty, some carmel and a plum kinda fruitiness. Fairly light in body. Dry finish. Very good, but maybe too dry and not malty enough for my taste.

No head whatsoever. Tastes pretty generic for a brown ale, but in a good way. I think the main flavor is molasses and nuts. Good but not great.
