Brewmaster Mark Carpenter’s unique recipe for Brekle’s Brown—a tip of the hat to our first brewmaster—looks to both the past and the future.
Mark’s special blend of roasted malts, inspired by the all-malt brown ales in Anchor’s brewing archives, gives Brekle’s Brown its coppery brown color and its unusual depth of flavor—richness and complexity without heaviness.
For brewing and dry hopping, Mark has chosen a single, American hop variety called Citra. The subtly entrancing flavors and aromas of this distinctive new hop perfectly complement the unique maltiness of Brekle’s Brown.
Ingredients: Water, barley malt, hops.

Geez, almost great. Served a bit cold, with very nice, large, tan, foamy, frothy, thick, creamy head that slowly settles and plenty of lace. Color is a pretty, clear mahoganey with many tiny bubble trails. Aroma is banana up front, then malt, roast, toffee, fruit. Flavor’s like nose and is fruity up front too; then there’s the classic brown ale flavors. Oddly, sweetness is muted at first and comes in later finishing along with the bitter and tang. Body and carbonation are good. Finish is like flavor, ending to a not altogether pleasant bittersweet slow taper.

355ml bottle from Bierzwerg. Poured mahogany color with a white, lasting head. Heavy malty aroma, fruity hops in the background, nutty, roasty on the nose. Flavor has toasted malt, caramel, hops and a very dry malty and spicy finish. Medium bodied, smooth, oily. Excellent brown ale! Not really a fan of brown ales but this just works.

(bottle, 35.5cl) Hazy, copper colour with a beige-coloured firm medium-sized foamy head. Sweet toast-malty aroma with notes of caramel/toffee, chocolate and a subtle fruity and nutty touch, accompanied by spicy hops. Moderately sweet flavour, medium to light bodied with a soft carbonation. Toasty malt-character with caramel, chocolate and subtle citrus-fruity hoppy notes; moderately toasty and sweet malty finish with chocolate, toffee, rounded off by slightly citric hops. Very nice. 15.V.12

This was an interesting brew for sure. Thanks again, Chipalsa for hooking this one up. I got plenty of caramel and nuttiness with some exotic fruit tones in the aroma. Taste mimicked the aroma perfectly, with caramel, some light chocolate, butterscotch aftertastes, and hints of passionfruit and guanabana. Such a refreshingly different brown ale.

Appearance - Deep red, creamy lacing
Aroma - Grassy, hops toffee, bread
Taste - Grain, raisins, butterscotch, light hops

This beer was pretty malty and only a tad bitter at first. While it warms up the hops give a tart flavor - as if you’re eating a raisin granola bar that smells like butterscotch. I like this take on the style.
