COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brewmaster Mark Carpenter’s unique recipe for Brekle’s Brown—a tip of the hat to our first brewmaster—looks to both the past and the future. Mark’s special blend of roasted malts, inspired by the all-malt brown ales in Anchor’s brewing archives, gives Brekle’s Brown its coppery brown color and its unusual depth of flavor—richness and complexity without heaviness. For brewing and dry hopping, Mark has chosen a single, American hop variety called Citra. The subtly entrancing flavors and aromas of this distinctive new hop perfectly complement the unique maltiness of Brekle’s Brown.

This is a pretty chestnut brown with a white head of many sized bubbles. Very mild aroma with a nutty flavor that’s a tad too sweet with an unfortunate metallic twinge. This is a drinkable beer for sure but a flawed one.

Bottle. Pours dark brown with light tan head. Aroma seems to have more hop then toasted/chocolate notes. Flavor is much the same, also has an undesired fruity type ester I’m just not into. Medium body with medium carbonation. Overall, just doesn’t strike me as a really good brown ale, I’d prefer less hop flavor in this one.

650ml bottle. Pours deep coppery brown with initially fluffy dirty white head. Aroma of molasses, caramel, chocolate, and a slight bit of citrus in the background. Smooth malty taste, full of deep choc flavours - interesting bitterness to finish thanks to the citra. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours clear ruby with perfect off white head and great retention. Aroma is ctira hop gooseberry and lychee, brown sugar, hint of fresh raisin. Taste is much more toasty than the aroma, nice interplay of caramel and berry notes. Body is full, rich, average carbonation, big mouthfeel, clean berry finish. Overall, probably my favorite beer from Anchor.

UPDATED: JAN 22, 2012 Bottle @ The BeerMongers... Poured an ideal, deep, hazy brown with a thin tan head. Nutty, malted sweet, a hint of toastiness. Hardly any hop flavor, low bitterness. Mostly big malt flavor that really wrapped around the palate. Cocoa powder, buttery caramel, and a slight roast.

pours very pretty. Drank a little warm, got big brain on it. slightly tan head. smell is pretty weak. little bit of dark malt and tiny hop smell, maybe some sweaty sock. mouthfeel is pretty good. lively enough.. little bit creamy in a guiness sort of way. taste is pretty good. brown sugar center. aftertast of some malt extract and hop. This is probably going to taste like water when it’s cold. I’m not a brown ale guy what can i say, but this is much better than say, a newcastle. Still would drink sierra tumbler over this one. Nite

Bottle. Light brownish red with small off white head. Nose is buttery and lightly hoppy. Sort of reminds me of one of the Maine Brewers Co. beers I had a couple summers ago in Portland. That buttery hoppiness combined with some rich caramel malts. This could be a good brew if the butter was a little less prominent. Malty, earthy, butter is less prominent in the flavor. Lightly bitter, peanut roast finish.

12oz bottle from Armanetti’s. Pours a clear, deep brown, amber tinted body with a finger-width, dense and creamy, light tan head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is caramel and raisin malts with a good amount of citrus. Some bread, cocoa, fruity esters, and toasty nuts. Flavor is similar. Thinner caramels with some bready, nutty malts up front. A touch of toast and some chocolate before the citrusy notes come in. Some raisin dark fruits towards the end before this finishes dry with a light roast, caramel, nuts, and citrus with a light bitterness. Lengthy aftertaste following a light body and a soft, moderate carbonation. Overall, an interesting brown ale. The malts are really soft and nice, but I’m not the biggest fan of the Citra hopping on this. Seems like a bit of a clash. Despite that, this was well balanced and unique. Not bad.

Pours copper orange with one finger of yellowish tan head. Nose is super buttery, diacetyl bomb. This is totally compounded by the Citra unfortunately. Lots of caramel and some raisiny notes. Very candylike. Flavor is the same, butter and caramel-y malt notes. Light herbal character. Soft carbonation and medium body.

650ml bottle. Pours a dark caramel brown with a large head. Aroma is raisin malt with some banana yeast. Taste is raisin malt throughout, a little grass. A tad fizzy.
