Brewmaster Mark Carpenter’s unique recipe for Brekle’s Brown—a tip of the hat to our first brewmaster—looks to both the past and the future. Mark’s special blend of roasted malts, inspired by the all-malt brown ales in Anchor’s brewing archives, gives Brekle’s Brown its coppery brown color and its unusual depth of flavor—richness and complexity without heaviness. For brewing and dry hopping, Mark has chosen a single, American hop variety called Citra. The subtly entrancing flavors and aromas of this distinctive new hop perfectly complement the unique maltiness of Brekle’s Brown.

Bottle from Coppers in Newcastle. A dark brown beer with copper highlights. It has an unusual sweet malty, chocolate and nutty flavour with a sugary finish.

2012.03.22 - 650ml bottle in pint glass. Pours dark orange or medium brown depending how the light hits. Fairly active head dissipates quickly and leaves pretty much nothing. Aroma is mildly sweet. Taste is interesting, a mix of sweetness, maltiness, and hops. A good assertive amount of hops but not too much. Nice brew.

Strong malt out front but the hops stick around. A rather unique mixture. Aroma is really nice and uncommon. Not what I was expecting. I think this is the first ’new’ brew since Fritz left the helm, so hopeful more good things to come.

Bottle. Clear brown, medium-thin tan head. Aroma of sweet bread, chocolate, caramel. Flavor is medium sweet. Medium body, thinner texture, good hop balance in the finish. Very nice brown ale.

500ml bottle shared by Anndiesel. Deep burgundy brown, looks unfiltered. Thin, steady beige/off-white head. Clean, mellow brown malt, toffee. Kind of nails it. Certainly a unique creature, but has some familiar feelings..think OSA mixed with the Bock. The hops are different, giving it a tangy orange-lime sour feel..not so much depth there. The malts are chewy and really shine. Almost a taste of rye going on. Good stuff.

Draft @ beertemple. Aroma is huge caramel, liquorice, candy like. Flavour is nice roasty liquorice with a caramel coating. A bit cloying, couldn’t drink a pint.

Deep ice-tea colored body with a small tan head. Aroma of malt, alcohol, earth, caramel, pit fruits and nuts. Medium-bodied with a creamy finish. Pungent nutty flavors with caramel, a touch of dryness and some light hop finish. Aftertaste is mostly about the malt and nuts here with some very mild earth and dryness throughout. Overall, a nice brown, but a little boozy when warmer.

Brownish orange appearance with a large tan head and good lacing. Aroma is roasted malt with hints of dark fruit and caramel. Soft, sweet flavors of molassas, brown sugar and ripe fruit. Alcohol is a bit more pronounced in the aftertaste. Medium bodied, subtly carbonated mouthfeel with a lingering finish.
