Brewmaster Mark Carpenter’s unique recipe for Brekle’s Brown—a tip of the hat to our first brewmaster—looks to both the past and the future. Mark’s special blend of roasted malts, inspired by the all-malt brown ales in Anchor’s brewing archives, gives Brekle’s Brown its coppery brown color and its unusual depth of flavor—richness and complexity without heaviness. For brewing and dry hopping, Mark has chosen a single, American hop variety called Citra. The subtly entrancing flavors and aromas of this distinctive new hop perfectly complement the unique maltiness of Brekle’s Brown.

A little disappointed. Anchor brews very traditional beers, which although high in quality, seem to fall behind today’s unique elements of the craft brew industry. The aroma was faint malt, but not toasted. The color was a dark brown with a creamy head. The palate was heavier but not so in the stomach. More strong malt flavors that brought out a sourdough essence. No evidence of hops here. Again, OK but not great.

Bottle from Alko, Helsinki. Pours reddish brown with a medium-sized white head. The aroma is an interesting mix between malty and hoppy elements. It offers some bready and nutty maltiness and plenty of floral and fruity hoppiness, probably from the Citra hops. Taste is also very hoppy: floral, citrus fruitiness dominates with berries and pushes malty notes to the background. Some sourness and bitterness in the finish. The palate is medium-bodied with a moderate carbonation. All in all, not a typical brown ale, but an intriguing and original beer altogether.

Bottle. A- Caramel, toffee, malts, slightly sweet, citrus, toast, nuts, dark fruits. A- Reddish brown color, clear liquid, dark tan head. T- Caramel, citrus, mild bitterness, malts, slighty sweet, toast, toffee, raisins. P- Medium body, average texture, average carbonation, complex finish. O- Unlike any brown ale I’ve had. A unique taste of malts and citrus. Gotta love those citrus hops and who would’ve thought they would work so well with caramel and toffee notes. Solid all around. I did prefer it much more cold than at room temp but a rich complex taste like no other.

Case (240) - GERMANY - AUG 17, 2014
Pours dark brown with medium head that quickly dissipates. Aroma is quite hoppy, freshly cut grass, herbal, citrus, caramel. Taste is a solid malt base, caramel and toffee, on the sweet side. Light nuttyness, very light bitterness. Rather unremarkable and simple, like a brown paper bag.
