3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
I’ve had this beer several times in the last month. It’s rotated in at my local. When I first had it I really liked it. It was a little sweet but not too hoppy or sour. The taste was smooth and had a surprisingly Belgian quality for a local beer. What’s interesting is that I don’t think it sits in the keg well or maybe the kegs are a little inconsistant. It’s gotten sweeter and sweeter over the last week and the aroma has gone from rich caramel to a little lifeless. At first I thought it could just be one beer or maybe my pallet getting used to it, but it’s been consistant for a the last 4-5 days. I meant to ask when they last changed the keg but this place is pretty busy so I assume they go through a keg every few days.
I definitely would have given it an 8 for aroma and taste after the first few I had but downgraded because of my recent tastings. I still like it, just not like I did and it is good to see an American brewery toning down the hops and creating a more drinkable brew. Since is supposed to be their original recipe, I’m guessing that is how the early US micro’s were brewed.

3.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Ruby mahogany with a foamy tan head. Medium-full body with medium-high carbonation.
Aroma: alcohol, dark dried fruit, oxidized apples, and faint caramel maltiness.
Taste: oxidized apples, astringent amber malt, alcohol, caramel and dried fruit, and citrus peel hop character. Seems like mostly generic 2-row brewers’ malt and a hefty portion of victory or special roast or some other amber/brown malt. Very dark crystal may be contributing some of the astringency. Overall, malt bill lacks richness and warmth, and hop character seems more appropriate for a pale ale.

2.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
Bottled sample. Reddish brown in colour with medium carbonation. Aromas are of mango, brown malt, and gumdrops. Flavors are an odd combination of sweet tropical and citrusy hop notes, working at cross-purposes with toast and molasses notes. A bit of grape jelly and nuts on the back end too. Just doesn’t work for me.

What a delicious brown ale! Complex flavor profile but not so complex that it confuses your tongue, this is with out a doubt a favorite of mine from Anchor. If the bouquet was more pungent / memorable it would have been a perfect brown ale in my eyes

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Brown ale muito interessante, com coloração escura e espuma de pouca persistência. Gosto de tostados e caramelos, com lúpulo frutado.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle 0,355L. Dark, mahagony red colour with small, creamy, light brown head. Rich aroma of roasted malts, caramel and citra hops almost makes me screamin’. Moderate bitter taste is followed by strong coffee taste and turns into heavy bitter, long lasting aftertaste. Really good brew!

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Qualche amarezza, amabile. Frizzantezza(orrenda parola da pubblicità) vivace.Finale leggermente dolce.
Più che soddisfacente nel complesso. Vorrei trovarla più spesso nei negozi.

Nice aroma and taste. My current favorite brown. Spruce, bubblegum aroma. Taste shows a bit more of the hops.
