COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brewmaster Mark Carpenter’s unique recipe for Brekle’s Brown—a tip of the hat to our first brewmaster—looks to both the past and the future. Mark’s special blend of roasted malts, inspired by the all-malt brown ales in Anchor’s brewing archives, gives Brekle’s Brown its coppery brown color and its unusual depth of flavor—richness and complexity without heaviness. For brewing and dry hopping, Mark has chosen a single, American hop variety called Citra. The subtly entrancing flavors and aromas of this distinctive new hop perfectly complement the unique maltiness of Brekle’s Brown.

I’ve had this beer several times in the last month. It’s rotated in at my local. When I first had it I really liked it. It was a little sweet but not too hoppy or sour. The taste was smooth and had a surprisingly Belgian quality for a local beer. What’s interesting is that I don’t think it sits in the keg well or maybe the kegs are a little inconsistant. It’s gotten sweeter and sweeter over the last week and the aroma has gone from rich caramel to a little lifeless. At first I thought it could just be one beer or maybe my pallet getting used to it, but it’s been consistant for a the last 4-5 days. I meant to ask when they last changed the keg but this place is pretty busy so I assume they go through a keg every few days. I definitely would have given it an 8 for aroma and taste after the first few I had but downgraded because of my recent tastings. I still like it, just not like I did and it is good to see an American brewery toning down the hops and creating a more drinkable brew. Since is supposed to be their original recipe, I’m guessing that is how the early US micro’s were brewed.

Bottle. Dark brown color with a medium sized beige head. Roasted malt in the aroma with notes of caramel and dark fruit. Medium sweet, roasted malt, caramel, dark fruit and some bitterness in the flavor. Light to medium body, soft carbonation.

Quite good too. There is a very special dark colour and nice taste and aroma too, like nut.

12 ounce bottle. Served in a pint glass, the beer pours a brown/copper color with about an inch tan head. Head retention and lacing are both good. The brew smells like caramel malt, nuts, apples and dark fruit. It tastes like caramel malt, nuts, citrusy hops (grapefruit), apples, dark fruit, and some molasses. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it’s creamy with moderate carbonation. I think this is a good brown ale, it’s certainly worth a try and I know I’d buy this again.

Barwa piwa w odcieniach brazu i czerwieni

Poured a dark reddish amber with a frothy tan head. Aroma of alcohol soaked berry fruit. Medium creamy body, flavour of sweet caramel malt and sweet bourbon with a bitter sweet end. Disappointing.

Aromas are nutty, earthy, piney, and somewhat grapey, similar to a mild English barleywine. Clear amber-brown with a lasting, khaki head. Dry, earthy, with some caramel, nuts, purple grape, and piney hop flavors. Light-medium bodied, refreshing carbonation, and finishes with sticky, dry, earthy hops on the palate.

Poured dark brown. High hopes based on pedigree. Nose of over ripe fruit that carried through to flavor. Malt flavor was impaired by sour notes. Hop was apropriate for style. Tasted among six other brown ales and this rates the worst.
