COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brewmaster Mark Carpenter’s unique recipe for Brekle’s Brown—a tip of the hat to our first brewmaster—looks to both the past and the future. Mark’s special blend of roasted malts, inspired by the all-malt brown ales in Anchor’s brewing archives, gives Brekle’s Brown its coppery brown color and its unusual depth of flavor—richness and complexity without heaviness. For brewing and dry hopping, Mark has chosen a single, American hop variety called Citra. The subtly entrancing flavors and aromas of this distinctive new hop perfectly complement the unique maltiness of Brekle’s Brown.

Dark brown, reddish hue, medium- strong tan creamy head, not very lasting. Aroma is caramel, toffee, nutty, some fruits, sweetish. Taste is medium sweet caramel, toffee, nuts, some toasted and fruity notes, low+ herbal hoppy bitterness. Roasty bitter dry finish. Medium bodied and carbonation, slightly creamy.

This brown ale is named after the German G. Brekle who took over the brewery in California in 1896. Whether it is brewed from one of Brekle’s old recipes from that time I am not quite familiar with - but it’s probably very likely. It is beautiful reddish-brown with light rough foam and caramel flavor with a little fresh fruity hop aroma. The taste is potent and full-bodied with great caramel filling, but also with a hoppy bitterness. It is a good (probably American) hop type, and it is a guess I may come up with because American hops often are very fresh and fruity. It could easily be Citra hops because of its strong hoppy aroma and its slightly easier bitterness with notes of citrus and exotic fruit, but as I said it is just my hopeless guess. It is a very marked hop bitterness, this brown ale have a good edge, and I find it very interesting and tasty. (Finally I read the small description on the top label, and discovers that it is actually Citra hops used. It is a little scary!)

Poured from their distinctive sloped 12 oz brown bottle into a tulip glass. Hazy reddish brown colour with big long-lasting off-white foam and lace. Excellent blend of nutty/bready/toasty/chocolatey/caramel malt sweetness and fruity/lemongrass Citra hops bitterness. Definitely hoppier than traditional English ales, but not overwhelmingly so. Dark but not excessively roasty or burnt. Some sharp graininess but no astringency. Nuanced and delicious. Light-medium body, moderate carbonation, smooth and full mouthfeel, well-concealed alcohol, lingering complex aftertaste. Crazy delicious, a near-perfect brown ale. This could easily be a daily-drinker for me.

Aroma: dried fruits, caramel Taste: very sweet, malty, some caramel and roast, but also a surprising amount of fruit (berries), small sour touch. Gets better than on first impression: once you get through the cloying sweetness, it is actually quite an interesting beer.

Bottle at home. Has a slightly hazy reddish brown color with a big, creamy beige head. Sweet aroma of caramel, raspberries, dried fruit, wood chocolate, plums and heather honey. Feels pretty Belgian. The flavor is quite fruity with additional tones of licorice, leather, pine and grass. A touch of alcohol as well. Has a medium body and a slick mouth feel. Low to medium bitterness. A fruity brown ale that changes between being a Belgian dubbel and a brown ale but the hops are lurking in the background.
