Brewmaster Mark Carpenterís unique recipe for Brekleís Brownóa tip of the hat to our first brewmasterólooks to both the past and the future. Markís special blend of roasted malts, inspired by the all-malt brown ales in Anchorís brewing archives, gives Brekleís Brown its coppery brown color and its unusual depth of flavorórichness and complexity without heaviness. For brewing and dry hopping, Mark has chosen a single, American hop variety called Citra. The subtly entrancing flavors and aromas of this distinctive new hop perfectly complement the unique maltiness of Brekleís Brown.

Had this just after Anchorís "Small Beer" (proof that sometimes less is not more), and the difference in quality could not be more stark. This is one of the best Brown Ales. Malt. Just enough hop to balance (perhaps not enough?). Hop-heads will not like, but this malt-head loves it.

Got to go straight into the flavor with this one. Brekleís Brown starts off tasting like toffee-coated hazelnuts and finishes with sweet tropical fruit flavors coming from the Citra hop(s). In between, you get flickers of chocolate, caramel, and brown sugar. As youíd expect, the nose has rich malt and a touch of bright citrus. The deep brown body and creamy, off-white head are just as enjoyable. Ditto for the smooth, refreshing mouthfeel. Itís pretty hard not to get hooked by this Brown Aleís candy-like flavors... even if you donít usually go for the style.

Brekleís Brown has a very thick, creamy, tan head and a clear, bubbly, brown appearance, with some lacing left behind. The aroma is of sweet, brown bread and a flash of hops; the taste is likewise of sweet brown bread, brown sugar, mild hop bitterness, and some caramel candy aspects. There were even some chocolate notes with this one. Mouthfeel is medium, and Brekleís Brown finishes refreshing, semi-dry, and easy drinking. Itís a most excellent beer. RJT

Brekleís Brown Ale pours out a nice dark brown color, mostly opaque but some light still makes it through. The lively foam is a light tan color, and lingers a bit longer than expected. Very little lacing left behind on the glass but thatís not surprising. Aromas are nicely malty, slightly sweet with just a touch of caramel and toffee. Flavors are great! The Brekleís Brown Ale is flavorful but super smooth. Completely dominated by malty flavors, Iím not picking up any hops bitterness at all. That being said itís not a candy-sweet style, as the Brekleís finishes nicely dry. I can honestly say this is the single best beer Iíve every had from Anchor Brewing! Itís smooth yet flavorful, refreshing yet satisfying: Iím legitimately impressed! This is a brew that weíll definitely be adding to our selection as soon as our distributors make it available to us. If youíve never tried the Brekleís Brown, Iíd suggest stopping in for a try.

I canít believe how low this is rated here. One of the deepest browns I have ever tasted. Sweet molasses on the nose with some caramel. Complex taste of sweet caramel and slight hops. About as far as you can push a brown flavor wise.

From bottle. Pours ruby brown liquid. Nice tan creamy head with small bubbles, that lasted. Gorgeous ale aroma, chocolate, caramel, cherry, candied fruits. Simply excellent. Medium body, soft carbonation, but very drinkable because of a bit sour finish. Taste is fruity sweetness, caramel, red fruit, nice acidity in the aftertaste. Excellent brown ale.

Crispy hop aroma. Deep ruby red color with a tan one finger head. Mild bitterness with sweet clean finish. Tingly on the tongue. Well balanced between the Citra hops and mild bitterness. Iím liking this more and more with each mouthful. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
