COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brewmaster Mark Carpenter’s unique recipe for Brekle’s Brown—a tip of the hat to our first brewmaster—looks to both the past and the future.
Mark’s special blend of roasted malts, inspired by the all-malt brown ales in Anchor’s brewing archives, gives Brekle’s Brown its coppery brown color and its unusual depth of flavor—richness and complexity without heaviness.
For brewing and dry hopping, Mark has chosen a single, American hop variety called Citra. The subtly entrancing flavors and aromas of this distinctive new hop perfectly complement the unique maltiness of Brekle’s Brown.
Ingredients: Water, barley malt, hops.

650ml bottle from Beers of Europe. An attractive looking bottle, and the beer initially seems pleasing, but ends up feeling like a poorly made home brew. It feels kind of amateurish. The hop choice doesn’t sit well with the malts. The hops are bright and citric, and the malts are dark, sweet and malty. The hop is slightly over done, giving a sickly taste, and intruding throughout. My gosh, a pint of this is a lot to wade through. It’s drinkable, but only just.

1st Feb 2016: 355ml bottle into a Chimay badged chalice at home. Lovely red hue to the clear body, on top a lightly tanned blanket of foam. Malty molasses rule the nose, their sweetness controlling the flavouring too, mild bitter aftertaste from the citra hops they used (no citrus fruit notes though), but the malts fill the mouth and your senses really and the aforementioned bitterness is also due to the roasted malts in the brew also.

Beautifully reddish-brown, Brekle’s tastes more like a non-spiced Belgian Dubbel than the American Brown I was hoping for. Instead of bready, biscuity snap, I am treated to a flavour and aroma of raisins and prunes, toffee and white toast. A nice creamy mouthfeel makes up for my pseudo-disappointment.

Bue en bouteille de 355ml. Couleur brun rubis. Nez fort sur le café et le pruneau. Palais beaucoup plus léger, malt, café et houblon discrets. Bière subtile bien équilibrée.

Bottle. Deep brown body with a thick beige head. Good lacing. Aroma of chocolate, flower petals and carrot cake. Flavour of toffee, brown sugar, fig and a light, floral hop finish. Medium body with a creamy mouthfeel. Soft fizz. Rich flavour balanced by an intriguing hop choice.

resin, floral, citrus. very strong resin aroma that overpowers the caramel, roasty, toffee flavours of malt. amber, hazy, white to off white head, minimal head. the hops again overpower the malt, lots of resin, some tropical fruits. from the malt i could sense toffee, caramel, some raisins. medium body, creamy, slick feel, lively, long finish, ok bitterness. quite nice but the dry hop aromas stick out too much, could be more balanced.
