Brewmaster Mark Carpenter’s unique recipe for Brekle’s Brown—a tip of the hat to our first brewmaster—looks to both the past and the future.
Mark’s special blend of roasted malts, inspired by the all-malt brown ales in Anchor’s brewing archives, gives Brekle’s Brown its coppery brown color and its unusual depth of flavor—richness and complexity without heaviness.
For brewing and dry hopping, Mark has chosen a single, American hop variety called Citra. The subtly entrancing flavors and aromas of this distinctive new hop perfectly complement the unique maltiness of Brekle’s Brown.
Ingredients: Water, barley malt, hops.

Bottle from ck1 - thanks bro! Pours an unclear honey-brown with a tannish head. Lots of spotty lacing. Aroma has brown sugar, toffee, some cocoa and a strange tannin odor (that normal Anchor-ness?). Taste is of sweet caramel, dark fruit, bread and some alcohol. Sticky. Very sweet. Finishes dry and somewhat short. Not too exciting - had better browns, and it is not that exciting a style to begin with.

Taste is slightly dry and burnt, raisins, burnt caramel, grass, alcohol, caramel malts, weeds, nuts, minerals, hay. Medium bitterness, slightly dry and watery mouthfeel. Fair enough.

The beer starts smooth malty. Nice brown aroma with a not too sugary sweetish brown body. Fresh but not too seep. Easy to drink, fresh, smooth. Sugary but quite dry aftertaste, not too much bitterness, caramel, hints of floral hops, nice.

Dark brown beer, creamy beige head. Nose is brown sugar, dried fruit, slightly toasty malt, caramel sweetness, citrus. Flavor is citric, nutty dryness, mild roast and malt, caramel. Hoppy, earthy, dry and citric finish with toasty caramel. Lingering hoppy bitterness that borders on resiny. A clean and mild brown ale with a healthy helping of Citra sounds strange, but I like this one.

Mycket gott!

12 oz bottle from Rockhead. Pours a murky orangey brown colour with decent eggshell-coloured head. Aroma is chocolate, caramel, nuts and light citric hops. Flavour has a more assertive citric hoppiness with still lots of maltiness - notes of toffee, chocolate, nuts and a light earthiness. Slick mouthfeel. Good one.

355 ml bottle. Pours a clear, reddish brown with a large, long lasting, beige head that laces. Roasted malt aroma with caramel, overripe fruit and citrus. Sweet flavour of roasted malt, caramel, overripe fruit and nuts with a dry, bitter finish. Medium body with an oily texture and soft carbonation. A little weird for a brown ale, but nice.
