Brewmaster Mark Carpenter’s unique recipe for Brekle’s Brown—a tip of the hat to our first brewmaster—looks to both the past and the future. Mark’s special blend of roasted malts, inspired by the all-malt brown ales in Anchor’s brewing archives, gives Brekle’s Brown its coppery brown color and its unusual depth of flavor—richness and complexity without heaviness. For brewing and dry hopping, Mark has chosen a single, American hop variety called Citra. The subtly entrancing flavors and aromas of this distinctive new hop perfectly complement the unique maltiness of Brekle’s Brown.

12 ounce bottle. Pours a nice reddish brown with a four inch tan head that lasts. Taste is of malt, caramel, hops, citrus, resin, wood and grass. Nice, warming aroma. Has a decent body with a warming finish. Good, but not as drinkable as what I’d like.

Bottle from AmmersinO, Vienna. Dark copper, brownish, clear body, with medium, creamy, beige head. Aroma of caramel, dried fruits, roast, some citrus. Tastes of caramel, red and dark fruits, banana, toast, citrus. Mouthfeel is medium, creamy, with a moderate carbonation and it finishes fruity, medium bitter, slightly roasty, slightly sour. Very good, complex, greatly balanced and quaffable! One of the best brown ales I’ve had so far.

Not a big of Brown Ales but a fan of Anchor. Sweet malty and nutty taste. Overall: 11/20.

Dark brown, beautiful fine beige creamy head. Very sweet aroma of malts, ripe dark fruits (plum, raisins, dates), caramel and some sweet red wine note. Taste adds a nice toastiness balancing the fruity sweetness. Slightly hoppy finish.

Opaque brown with a reddish hue. Nice sized head. Extremely pungent aroma consisting of malt, light roast, caramel, and hops. Complex and absolutely delectable flavour. Malt, roast, and some lingering dried fruit intertwined with citrus. Smooth and creamy. One of my favourites.

A dark red, cloudy beer with a firm compact layer of foam, like a stout. In the aroma are the hints of chocolate and caramel. It tastes however sweet and like licorice, and this moves on into a subtile bitter aftertaste.

35.5cl bottle @ home. Reddish-dark brown color, minimal brownish head. Aroma citrus and caramel in the nose, flavor is more caramel, hint of wine, roasted malt, cocoa, slightly coffeeish. Taste light sweetness, medium bitterness. Full body, creamy texture, dry feel, average carbonation, fine cocoa bittersweet finish. Excellent dessert beer.

Ruby mahogany with a foamy tan head. Medium-full body with medium-high carbonation.

Aroma: alcohol, dark dried fruit, oxidized apples, and faint caramel maltiness.

Taste: oxidized apples, astringent amber malt, alcohol, caramel and dried fruit, and citrus peel hop character. Seems like mostly generic 2-row brewers’ malt and a hefty portion of victory or special roast or some other amber/brown malt. Very dark crystal may be contributing some of the astringency. Overall, malt bill lacks richness and warmth, and hop character seems more appropriate for a pale ale.
