To commemorate an important milestone in Anchor Brewing’s long history, a special ale seemed appropriate. Having found and experimented with a very rare and unusual hop variety called Nelson Sauvin, we knew that its unique character would impart a wonderful flavor and aroma to a pale ale brewed especially for the occasion: Humming Ale.

Bottle. Amber with a good sized head. Apple juice with ginger and bitter citrus - very refreshing, crisp and clean. Good balance.

"a lighter apa that is distinctly anchor. good balance and bittering, not a lot of citrus and a common anchor flavor and aroma that was familiar yet unique for the style. nice brew."

January 10th, 2013 - Anchor Brewing’s Steam Lager is a keystone in brewing history and culture, but what of their other brew lines? Are they like Bluemoon’s offshoots, disgracing an otherwise good beer with clumsily painted on flavors? Not so. The other Anchors aren’t spin-offs so much as they are new styles, though predictably light and airy, like the patriarch. The Humming Ale is a foamy beard, growing a great white head of thick foam over a semi-cloudy, copper liquid. The smell brings light straw, a nice sourdough tang and yeastiness, and a touch of that sweetness found in old-fashioned rolls. The palate is light and spritzy, masking the flavors until the bubbles pop and clear away. This reveals a slow ramping up of flavor to a funky and fresh biscuit flavor, which rolls and rides well into the aftertaste, complemented by some generic graininess, and a light but curious hop flavor. This is definitely light drinking, but more engaging than most sessionable beers thanks to that sour peal found in the funkier of the flavors.

Clear golden. Frothy, offwhite head. Aroma has malt, caramel and hoppy notes. Flavour citrus on a malty background.

Transfer from BA review on 11-2-12- Served on tap in a pint glass Appearance – The brew is served a deep golden color with a one finger white head. The head fades relatively quickly to leave only a very light level of lacing. Smell – The aroma is very light. There is a light bready aroma mixed with faint notes of a lemon, herbal and grassy smells. Taste – It starts out with a biscuit taste mixed with a light lemon flavor. As the taste advances, some floral tastes and a light pine flavor come to the tongue. These flavors seem to be lost relatively fast however due to flavors of an earthy and grapefruit nature coming in. These flavors take the taste to the end and leave bitter-biscuity flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is rather average in terms of creaminess and thickness with a carbonation level that is rather average as well. A decent feel for the moderate hop and bready flavors of the brew. Overall – It was a decent brew, although with the more bitter hop finish, the taste was slightly off at the end. Alright, but nothing I would really go for on any real occasion.

I really like this beer! With its deep yellow color, aroma of elderflower and honey and the great taste with notes of honey as well and a great malty bitternness. Yummie.

(bottle - 12 oz) Hazy gold pour with a puffy white head. Hoppy but malty balanced aroma. Some light floral notes. Bready malts at the start of the flavor with a bitter and dry spicy hop finish.

Reviewed from notes. This was poured into a pint glass. The appearance has a fairly clear burnt golden orange color body with a white one finger head. There was some light lacing that slid right on into the body. The smell had some light floral with just a touch spicy with underlying tropical notes. The taste was mild with a light bittersweet floral to spicy to grasp a light pine hovering over a some light toasty biscuit. There was a fairly decent lingering biscuit aftertaste that lead into a dry finish. On the palate, this one sat fairly light but also showed a decent aspect to make me think it could have sat at medium on the body. I’d say this was fairly sessionable and did have a decent carbonation to it. Overall, in my opinion, this is a good APA worthy of having again.
