To commemorate an important milestone in Anchor Brewing’s long history, a special ale seemed appropriate. Having found and experimented with a very rare and unusual hop variety called Nelson Sauvin, we knew that its unique character would impart a wonderful flavor and aroma to a pale ale brewed especially for the occasion: Humming Ale.

From bottle. Pours nice clear copper gold liquid. White head out of small bubbles faded quickly. Beautiful, uniquely deep, honey and malt, spices or herb hops aroma. Full body, soft carbonation, dry end. Taste is full malty, at the beginning honey, than herbs, finishes with strong bitterness with character. The aftertaste is in comparison with the beginning rather dry. Relatively good drinkability despite full body.

Bottle from Seijo Ishii in Kyoto station, I thought I’d already rated this but I guess it slipped through my fingers, oh well here we go again. It pour a light amber with a mild hoppy nose but I felt that the malts were a bit too forward for a Pale Ale. It was good but unimpressive.

Bottle. Golden and clear with a medium head. Hoppy and flowery with some citrus also pleasant. Creamy head and a bitter finish. The label is bland and a bit old fashioned. The beer is excellent.

Bottled. Clear, pale amber colour, frothy head. Looks inviting. Aroma is fruity, slightly berryish and floral Nelson hops and caramel malts. Crisp, slightly toasted malts, fresh and dry. Lingering, enjoyably bitter finish. Medium body, frothy texture. Really enjoyable and refreshing. Perfect balance of hops and barley.

Bottle 355ml, a golden beer with medium head, good lace work. Nose is on fruit hops such as orange, grapefruit, resin and bitter mandarin, Aroma is on caramel, burnt caramel, caramalt, slightly toasted, good earthy and grassy bitterness, smooth, long bitter and burnt caramel like finish. Very pleasant, easy drinkable and well balanced beer, good, malty side is more interesting than fruit hops side.

Bottle. Strong aromas of caramelly hop and dried fruit. Body was clean and crisp, but had a decent depth to it. Enjoyed the flavours of toffee, raisins and a touch of citrus. Well balanced and rounded. Commendable stuff.

Dark blond colour. Flavour of floral and citrusy hops balanced well with a nice malty background.

Look: strong, dark orange, medium carbonation; forms a stable 2 fingers high crown which faded slowly and left nice rings after drinking;;

Smell: soft, kinda underwhelming light smell; can detect sweet malts and fruity, citrus hops;;

Taste: starts bitter then comes to a smooth and pleasant finish; soft citrus, grapefruit notes are found in the bitterness and stay with you;;

Moutfeel: pleasantly spicy but light carbonation feel, medium body, very easy to drink; refreshing, leaves smooth citrus bitterness;;

Overall: light, fruity, smooth bitterness, good brew, a nice drinkable APA
