bottled and on tap at the anchor brewery: this is a nice beer. refreshing with some sour aftertones. malt and hop balance and character show through like the original anchor steam. however, for an IPA quite suttle in the hop area. this isnt a bad thing it just is a bit more mellow then what the newer ones taste like. cool crisp and refreshing.

A very thirst quenching beer and one of the more balanced IPAs that I've had. Nice citric and piney nose, with a fruity/citric flavor. A good fruity flavor throughout. This one doesn't bombard our senses like Celebration Ale, but this one is more of the "everyday" IPA.

3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: JUN 23, 2005 It has a little bit of a bite, and the cascade hops are the primary influence, but it isnít overbearing. Thereís a muskyness in there . The light gold color is somewhat cloudy and the mouthfeel is initially medium, but it seems to morph into a full bodied brew while it sits in the mouth - it fizzes up and grows. It is fruity and very clean, but also dark and bitter - an interesting combonation. The head is huge and creamy, lacing the glass eternally. The color has just enough amber to let you know that it is not an average corporate beer. It is great overall, although I could see someone not liking the amount of hops, maybe.

Poured a nice golded yellow with a thick white head. Aroma was mainly of citrus fruits and hops. Medium bodied mouthfeel. Spices, orange peel, and hops on the tongue. This was a really nice beer.

I had this on draught at the brewery in SF. Easily the IPA I've ever had. Perfectly balanced. I recently tried this out of the bottle and was very disappointed. If you ever have the chance to tour the brewery, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about.

My sample didn't seem so hoppy especially for an IPA. Good aroma and clear ambur color.
Big flavor with the fruity background. Clean finish with the Cascade hop flavor.

Highly enjoyable hopped up ale. Great golden amber with big ole white bubbles sitting on top. Floral and fruity and then leaves you with that lemon-fresh taste in your mouth. Glad this one is available on a regular basis.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: MAR 10, 2005 hoppy aroma. decent pour, decent white head... bubbles could bead a lot more and group together tighter. nearly clear amber gold body. a bit thin, but a refreshing brew in any case. it reminds me of peconic county reserve ale by southampton. it has a juicy yet bitter tart fruit and grape aroma and flavor. i think it needs more malt backup. i like it, despite the cost, which is a bit high. UPDATE 4/10/05: snifter / very nice, slightly active amber body with nearly white, tight, fizzy, and slowly diminishing head that ends up rockier and rockier. itís with a good, smooth, and lively palate thatís not thick nor too thin. itís with a simple flavor and aroma thatís floral with grapefruit, and with just enough toasty maltiness to balance, but obviously itís not without its abundant hoppiness. quite nice for a good and hoppy session beer! (the price is a bit high, but itís a quencher. uprated palate and appearance a point.)

UPDATED: FEB 6, 2005 Tan orange color, medium head that mostly dimishes. Aroma is of medium dry citrus hops. Flavor is light and dry of hops and some yeast. Very good. Rerate: This stuff has really grown on me. So much character in this one, how could it not?

UPDATED: JAN 16, 2004 I need to come up with better words to describe beer color, so until then I am boycotting that part of my ratings. The cascade hops will lay you out if you are not expecting it; however, I was. But really, this is a quite hoppy beer, both in aroma and flavor and from beginning to end. There are more hopped up brews, but his one sometimes just hits the mark. Nicely balanced for an IPA. I just wish it was a bit less pricey. Are we still paying for its uniqueness almost 3 decades later? Why do I like this so much more than SNPA?
