SamGamgee (646), Isla Vista, California, USA Aug 8, 2008 12oz bottle. Dark gold, almost orange color with a lasting head. Quite citrusy and yeasty aroma. Light malts have just enough sweetness to bring out the citrus fruit flavors is the hops, but aren’t heavy or sticky. The impression you get is a crisp, relatively light and hoppy ale, though not really that hoppy in the grand scheme of west coast IPAs. I’m kinda a sucker for these hoppy and bitter APAs that push the threshold of IPA bitterness, but stay light and refreshing. The taste definitely reminds me of more old school stuff like SNPA or Full Sail, but Anchor seems to have gotten their formula right many years ago. Definitely eclipsed by newer, flashier hoppy ales from the west coast, but remains simple, balanced, and quite tasty in its own right.
milljam (166), Norman, Oklahoma, USA Dec 2, 2008 A nice pale. Good hop profile...nice aroma of citrus and flavor of citrus/floral. Malt background is nice, although could have a bit more of a biscuit presence. mullet2007 (158), Newfoundland, Canada Nov 21, 2008 Pours a hazy yellow colour with a very thick creamy white head. Nose is a tiny bit soapy (The glass has never seen a drop of detergent either.) with plenty of hop presence. Mainly citrus, but with a little bit of resin. In the mouth the soapiness comes out as a bit more yeasty than soapy. Still lots of hop flavour present in the flavour though. A little bit more pine and resin in the mouth than in the nose, but still some citrus there too. It’s a bit malty in the back, but it doesn’t stand out much, it’s definitely balanced a little more towards the hops. Carbonation is pretty high, but suiting, and not sharp. It’s not exactly creamy, but that wouldn’t fit with the style too well anyway. Nice beer. Dmalone102 (114), Denver, Colorado, USA Nov 20, 2008 This was very hoppy, but well balanced. Nice biscuit flavor that compliments the cascades. It is very hoppy, but easy to drink. I really liked the liberty ale! CaryTheDude (489), Ripon, Wisconsin, USA Nov 19, 2008 Crushed with Jakebra. Yummy, citrusy, balanced malt and hop nose and flavor. Fruitiness gets rotten in the finish and makes it not as refreshing as it should. Still excellent. Brewsmith (81), Torrance, California, USA Nov 3, 2008 From a 22 oz bottle purchased locally. Aroma is citrusy lemon/orange, Orange gold in color with a one-inch white head. Flavor is lemony and a little oxidized. No complexity to the malt. Flat body and lacks richness. This is a bad bottle. I’ve had this beer before and I know it’s much better.
