COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Barrel-aged ale is not new. It is a centuries-old tradition, from a time when barrels were thought of simply as the containers in which ale was stored and transported from brewery to tavern. Our experiments at Anchor, however, revealed that a carefully considered blend of our own ales, aged in-house in our own ex-Old Potrero handmade oak barrels, results in a unique, complex, and delightfully new tradition: Our Barrel Ale. Available in 50.7-oz magnum bottles.

Tap at Capitol Beer in Sacramento, CA. Pours dark copper with a beige head. Aromas of citrus and rye? Med body or better. It’s sort of rye spicy. Just a little on the sweet side. There’s a subtle oak astringency that seems to turn it towards dry. Very well blended flavors. Nice.

A: The pour is a clear, amber color with a mild carbonation and a small off-white head. S: A nice combination of sweet caramel, brown sugar, toffee, and dark fruit aromas fills the nose. There is some barrel influence, but nothing overwhelming. T: A nice, complex flavor which follows the nose for the most part. The caramel and dark fruits lead the way with some undertones of oak and bourbon. There’s also a slight spice to the beer which I did not detect much of in the nose. M: The low level of carbonation lends the beer a slightly slick mouthfeel, even with its medium body. I will say I was expecting this to be a bit fuller. D: Despite a slight disappointment on the mouthfeel, I found this to be a great offering from Anchor, and one that I’ve very much wanted to try. I certainly did not plan on having so many of my highly coveted wants tasted in one day.

On tap at Hops and Pie poured a clear reddish amber with a lasting creamy amber head. Aromas of rye, carmel, spice, toffee and light fruittiness. Palate was light bodied and smooth with a dry finish. Flavors of toffee, carmel, oak, rye and light fruittiness with a smooth dry lingering rye finish.
