COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Barrel-aged ale is not new. It is a centuries-old tradition, from a time when barrels were thought of simply as the containers in which ale was stored and transported from brewery to tavern. Our experiments at Anchor, however, revealed that a carefully considered blend of our own ales, aged in-house in our own ex-Old Potrero handmade oak barrels, results in a unique, complex, and delightfully new tradition: Our Barrel Ale. Available in 50.7-oz magnum bottles.

Bottle at Big Beers, Belgians, and Barleywines Festival. Pours clear mahogany/dark brown with little to no head, thus little to no lacing. Aroma is heavy caramel, toasted, nutty malt with dark fruit sweetness. Some oak, vanilla, and whiskey notes. Sweet caramel malt flavor with oak and whiskey character; dark fruit (dates, plums) notes with faint vanilla. Moderate-full body with moderate-low carbonation, and a slick texture.

Woodshop. Thanks drbill! Brown pour. Hardly any head. Aroma of brown sugar, bourbon, oak, toffee, maple syrup and honey. Flavor is sublime. Smooth and sweet without being cloying. Maple, toffee, caramel, booze, oak, honey...fuck this was damn good.

[2/4/16] Draught at Firewood Grill in San Francisco Airport. Dark brown. Aroma of caramel, wood, dark fruits, molasses, a bit of licorice. Sweet flavor with caramel, dark fruits, licorice, wood, and a bitter finish with a spicy alcoholic note. Medium-bodied.

Bottle… RBWG ‘10… Clear mahogany ale with a small, creamy, off-white head. Good retention. In the nose and flavor, caramel, toasted almonds and coconut are real standouts. Medium-bodied with nearly expired carbonation. Whispers of wood and bourbon in the finish.

Gabf. Hazy, darkish orange appearance with a foamy, cream colored head. Sweet, caramel, vanilla, toasty oaky aroma. Quite oaky, vanilla, light toffee, caramel malty flavor. Pretty tasty.

1.5L (magnum) thanks to ygtbsm94 at RBSG 2011 in Philly. The pour is a flat, red amber with bubbles for a head. Nose is cheesy hops, heavy toffee and brittle, small butter. Comes across as being a beer I am not going to like very much. Taste is imperial red like with lots of specialty malts, maybe some unwanted crystal malt, and lots of syrup and maple. Stale hoppiness. Very sweet and syrupy. Sort of in between an Imperial Red and barleywine. Not for me :(

Porter like in color. Aroma of dark fruit mostly, little barrel on the nose. Flavor is malty, fruity and earthy. Rarely do I say this, but the barrel presence is weak. I appreciate subtlety but wanted more in this one. A decent beer overall, if not what was expected. Like many Anchor beers, well crafted but ultimately unremarkable.

Draft at Tempest, which we hit during/after Box Kitchen, after Cellarmaker, and before Mikkeller Bar. This place was great. Had a bunch of unexpected Anchor stuff on. Most striking to me was this, a weird Anchor beer I’ve had on my Wants list for years and never expected to see. They served it in a pint glass, hell yes. Pours a cloudy dark brown with a moderate beige head that settles into a ring and laces the glass. Oaky, with mild roast and toast, vanilla, chocolate, caramel, earth, cardboard, metal, and mild spice. Medium-bodied, with moderate carbonation and a metallic, spicy, roasty, oaky, earthy mouthfeel. I wonder how old the keg is. It seems a bit old, but probably isn’t. Not a standout, knock-your-socks-off beer, but I’m so glad to have finally tried it. Cool experience.
