Commercial Description:
Barrel-aged ale is not new. It is a centuries-old tradition, from a time when barrels were thought of simply as the containers in which ale was stored and transported from brewery to tavern. Our experiments at Anchor, however, revealed that a carefully considered blend of our own ales, aged in-house in our own ex-Old Potrero handmade oak barrels, results in a unique, complex, and delightfully new tradition: Our Barrel Ale. Available in 50.7-oz magnum bottles.

Rye and toasted oak nose with hints of coconut, vanilla, white pepper and caramel. Soft and herbal on the palate with further influence form the rye whisky leading into a very toasted toffee and biscuit middle with some mild oak astringency at the end. This would be phenomenal with less time in barrel. Limited to a 100 case 600 bottle release, sampled at the SF beer week kickoff/OBA tasting party.

Magnum courtesy of IronOrr. Back label of the bottle shows 8% ABV but I do not know the vintage. Opaque mahogany pour with a short tan head. Aroma is strong oak, vanilla, and slight caramel notes. Taste is alcohol, vanilla, caramel, oak, sweet malt and chocolate. Body is medium with light carbonation notes. Pleasant warmth as well. Finish brings out more vanilla, oak, cocoa, sweet malt and light alcohol notes. Rather nice!

Big thanks to some dude at the tasting, you rock dude. Pours deep striking mahogany with thin off white head. The aroma is full bourbon then oak and then wafting over to a robust layer of tasty smelling sticky maltiness. The taste starts with pure malt, dark fruitiness and bourbon sweetness. A very nice combination creating a smooth opening act. It then becomes thinner with booze and then some modest notes of oak. The stuff is drinking very nice and ending somewhat sweet, nutty, sweet bourbon, oak and yum.

Magnum. Pours brown with a thin but persistent tan head. Smells of vanilla, oak, some whiskey, caramel, cognac, some spicy hints, peppery. Taste reveals some vinuous hints initially that give way to a dry oakiness with some sweet toffee and dark fruity elements and a peppery, nutty finish. Excellent!

Thanks to tpd975 and retorp for the share. Pours dark cola brown with thin white head. Nose is bourbon, cola, chocolate, spice, cinnamon, vanilla, barrel, and some Christmas Ale. Taste really strikes like Our Special Ale, lots of bourbon, vanilla, cola, and spices throughout. Body is a bit thin, as is carbonation. Very nice, enjoyable beer.

Magnum thanks to Hophead84, thanks for sharing this one Shane. Pours coffee brown with some faint red highlights, small beige head with a touch of lacing. Good amount of whiskey and wood on the nose as well as caramel, toffee and some dark fruits. The flavor kicks off with hints of vanilla, whiskey, caramel.......some fig and plum in there as well. Finishes pretty hot, overall pretty damn tasty.

Pours with a dark amber brown body topped by a medium thick head with little lacing. It’s slightly sweet and malty with great vanilla, caramel and bourbon notes. Full bodied and smooth yet warming.
