COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Barrel-aged ale is not new. It is a centuries-old tradition, from a time when barrels were thought of simply as the containers in which ale was stored and transported from brewery to tavern. Our experiments at Anchor, however, revealed that a carefully considered blend of our own ales, aged in-house in our own ex-Old Potrero handmade oak barrels, results in a unique, complex, and delightfully new tradition: Our Barrel Ale. Available in 50.7-oz magnum bottles.

Double-Mag shared thanks to mrubio. (Donít know vintage, but past prime). Lovely oxidation aroma. Murky brown, with lean body, nearly flat. Dusty flour nose, smooth whiskey dominates flavor, warming finish.

On tap at The Office Bar and Grill. Rich sweet whiskey and wood aroma, loads of caramel. Taste is on the sweet side, followed by the woody bourbon. Finishes semi-dry with plenty of tight astringent bitterness. Some alcohol burn. Tasty and pretty strong. Hard to find, but worth it. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Tap at Jernigans NC. A really nice example of what a wood aged beer can be mildly. As to say, you really taste the wood in this beer...not the bourbon or the wine...the wood. Itís a solid Strong Ale with a heavy malt all the way through. Hints of oak through with a woody finish. Could be a bit thicker, but tasty!

Tap at Capitol Beer in Sacramento, CA. Pours dark copper with a beige head. Aromas of citrus and rye? Med body or better. Itís sort of rye spicy. Just a little on the sweet side. Thereís a subtle oak astringency that seems to turn it towards dry. Very well blended flavors. Nice.

Glassy red in color with a fine, contrasting white head, the nose is strong of alcohol and, perhaps, whiskey barrel wood. Itís easy, and not over-wooded, but still potent with alcohol. It reminds me very much of an Old Foghorn, but thinner in body and flavor. This beer should not be consumed cold. Itís thin, wet, and straight to the point. Drink it cold and you lose alot of the beerís gentle nuances. Although it tastes fresh, itís still palatable for a beer that, by its nature, should be aged. But itís nice, classy, and has a great flavor profile of an American Barleywine, with hops and delicious, woody malts. Overall, itís thin, but to the point. A really easy drink.

Sampled at GABF2013. Pours a ruddy mahogany with a nice white head. Aroma of barrel, christmas tree, pine, spice, some oak and resinous qualities as well. Flavor is fairly bitter with a moderate sweetness. Lots of vanilla, oak, pine, and bourbon. Slick bodied, lively carbonation. Finishes with lots of oak and bourbon. Enjoyable.

Tap at GABF 2013. Poured a clear medium amber with a frothy white head. The aroma is with fruity and resinous. The flavour is fairly neutral vegetable with a weak liqourice weak fruit resin palate. This beer is so hard to rate but it was very drinkable and I would love to cellar a bottle of this stuff.

16 ounce sample on tap at Toronado for their 26th anniversary. The aroma has a light dustiness with a mild to moderate bourbon character, and nice underlying sweetness present. Good nose. Transparent amber body with a small, weak, off-white head. Starts a bit fizzy and carbonated, before light metallic, tinny flavor comes in briefly. Bourbon then follows which plays well with the base beer. Very balanced. Finishes with slight metal. A little too carbonated, but otherwise, nice.
