Double-Mag shared thanks to mrubio. (Don’t know vintage, but past prime). Lovely oxidation aroma. Murky brown, with lean body, nearly flat. Dusty flour nose, smooth whiskey dominates flavor, warming finish.

Been wanting to try this one FOREVER. Got lucky and picked up two at Total Wine in Spokane. Pours nearly walnut brown with good clarity and khaki head.... Nice barrel notes nod politely toward the rye whiskey... caramel maltiness with plenty of dry toastiness is balanced perfectly by the whiskey and wood... subtle dried cherry essence with warmth... This one exceeded my lofty expectations.

4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Anchor Barrel Ale has a thick, spongy, beige head, a dark, reddish-brown appearance, and a touch of lacing left behind. Aroma is of dark malt, brown bread, black cherry, and oak whiskey barrel. Taste is of all that, with brown bread crust, and moderate bitterness. The alcohol level is more subvert, than overt. Mouthfeel is high medium and velvety, and Anchor Barrel Ale finishes wet and rich. RJT

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Svartbrun i färgen. Vanilj, ek och malt i doft. Smaken är tyvärr stickig av kolsyra, ek och vanilj kommer igen med lite torkad frukt. Stickigheten förstör helheten.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Aromas of whiskey, oak, malt and toffee. Malt dominates; hops fairly subdued.
Color is very dark brown with a moderate light brown head.
Fairly sweet; bitterness is at best moderate; this is a malt dominated ale.
Body is surprisingly light for a bourbon barrel aged strong American ale. Creamy texture; average carbonation and a moderate to long sweet, malty, lightly bourbon finish.
Overall fairly good, but not especially complex and a bit thin and malt dominated for my taste.

Draft at Tempest, which we hit during/after Box Kitchen, after Cellarmaker, and before Mikkeller Bar. This place was great. Had a bunch of unexpected Anchor stuff on. Most striking to me was this, a weird Anchor beer I’ve had on my Wants list for years and never expected to see. They served it in a pint glass, hell yes. Pours a cloudy dark brown with a moderate beige head that settles into a ring and laces the glass. Oaky, with mild roast and toast, vanilla, chocolate, caramel, earth, cardboard, metal, and mild spice. Medium-bodied, with moderate carbonation and a metallic, spicy, roasty, oaky, earthy mouthfeel. I wonder how old the keg is. It seems a bit old, but probably isn’t. Not a standout, knock-your-socks-off beer, but I’m so glad to have finally tried it. Cool experience.
