San Francisco’s celebrated Old Foghorn Ale has been virually handmade by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer, in one of the world’s smallest and most traditional breweries, since 1975. Our barleywine-style ale, the first of its kind in modern times in the United States, has a luscious depth of flavour that makes it ideal for sipping after dinner. It is made with top-fermenting yeast, fresh whole hops, and "first wort", the richest runnings of a thick all-malt mash. Old Foghorn is "dry hopped" in the classic ale tradition and aged in our cellars until it attains the perfect balance of malty sweetness, estery fruitiness, and exquisite hop character, for which it is known throughout the world. A ruby red ale with little carbonation and a warm finish.

A- Pours a deep amber color with a small fizzy head that fades quickly. S- Lots of dark fruit, fig, brown sugar, hints of apricot. T- Very fruity, apricot, prune, fig and brown sugar that moves into a very dry finish with a nice crisp, semi bitter finish. M- Medium to full bodied with a good amount of carbonation. D- This incredibly fruity and dry barleywine is very drinkable and not nearly as heavy as expected.

Pours brownish with a thin off-white head that dissipates quickly. Nose is dried fruit, raw sugar, and booze. Taste is well-balanced: quite sweet, but some nice lightly floral hop notes. Medium body, lively carbonation. A very tasty barley wine. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

35.5cl bottle @ home. Dark-reddish color, minimal beige head. Smells caramel, wild yeast and red wine notes. Flavor is strong malty, caramel again, honey, slighly chocolate and roasty, red wine again. Alcohol is slightly noticable, especially in the gullet and stomach. Taste medium sweetness, medium bitterness, lightly sour. Full body, sticky texture, soft carbonation, massive bittersweet finish. Interesting, strong flavor, good dessert beer, but a bit too wine-ish for me therefor it’s not really my style.

This was good!! Found on tap at the Underground Friday at lunch……………. awesome day!!!! Ruby red with brown shining through, cap aint that bad……. Earthy, malty, dark fruit sweetness, goodness is good in this good aroma that is good, very good. I could smell this all lunch but my co-workers are looking at me funny so I guess I’ll drink. Taste is deep in raisins, plums, and all sorts of dark fruits, it’s bordering on a port like quality. Low carbonation makes this easy to drink. Earthy malts balance out the sweetness perfectly. Honey shows up but maybe not. The more I drink the more I taste blood orange. Dam fine find at lunch………. I love lunch.

Pours a translucent dark ruby red-brown with barely any white head and some minimal watery lacing. Smells like sherry, melted hard candy, plum and apricot. Tastes similar, with spicy raisin and dried fruit and more port/sherry. Body has a bit of slickness and no carbonation. I can see how this would be really good if you like barley wines, and perhaps this style just isn't for me, but I didn't really like this. I found it overly sweet, and that in combination with the strong alcohol made me think of a dessert wine more than a beer.
