San Francisco’s celebrated Old Foghorn Ale has been virually handmade by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer, in one of the world’s smallest and most traditional breweries, since 1975. Our barleywine-style ale, the first of its kind in modern times in the United States, has a luscious depth of flavour that makes it ideal for sipping after dinner. It is made with top-fermenting yeast, fresh whole hops, and "first wort", the richest runnings of a thick all-malt mash. Old Foghorn is "dry hopped" in the classic ale tradition and aged in our cellars until it attains the perfect balance of malty sweetness, estery fruitiness, and exquisite hop character, for which it is known throughout the world. A ruby red ale with little carbonation and a warm finish.

my first barleywine. nice aroma: a touch of honey, white grapes, a little hint of melon. Great taste. Very sweet, but with enough complexity: warm maltiness, dried fruit (plums, raisins), dark cake, honey, vanilla, woody hints.

First barley wine in a long time at the brass tap on draft. Such caramel sweetness with hop balance. I miss this style. Mildly dank with some licorice. Not boozy at all. Not as good as Bigfoot but a great reintroduction. Reddish brown with mild lace

Bottle. Pours ruby with a white head. Aroma: malty, wood, nuts. Taste: molasses, chestnut, wood, blue grapes, maple syrup. Very, very sweet, no bitterness. Medium body, sticky, fairly short finish. Actually very nice if it wasnt for the smothering sweetness.

12oz bottle pours clear brownish Amber color with a medium light tan head that fades on leaves spotty lacing. Smells of plums, figs, molasses, caramel and citrus. Tastes of the same things in the smell. Mouthfeel is heavy and slightly chewy with good carbonation and a dry finish. Great tasting barley wine. A lot of flavors going on. You pick up something different every sip. Wonder what a little age would do?

Highly complex and harmonious taste. Its fullness and sweetness is perfectly balanced with slightly bitter finish.

12 ounce bottle purchased thirteen months ago at Select Beer Store in Redondo Beach. Pours a brown / red / garnet hue with two fingers of off-white colored foam that quickly reduces to a thin layer. AROMA of sticky dark toffee, candied plums and dates, holiday fruit cake, some subdued hops, and a bit of booze. FLAVOR reminiscent of a nice port with elements of dark fruit and pipe tobacco, also notes of rich caramel, tangy hops, and sweet molasses. Moderately sweet with concealed alcohol in the mouth (though somewhat perceptible in the nose). A really great version of the style. (1845, 863)
