San Francisco’s celebrated Old Foghorn Ale has been virually handmade by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer, in one of the world’s smallest and most traditional breweries, since 1975. Our barleywine-style ale, the first of its kind in modern times in the United States, has a luscious depth of flavour that makes it ideal for sipping after dinner. It is made with top-fermenting yeast, fresh whole hops, and "first wort", the richest runnings of a thick all-malt mash. Old Foghorn is "dry hopped" in the classic ale tradition and aged in our cellars until it attains the perfect balance of malty sweetness, estery fruitiness, and exquisite hop character, for which it is known throughout the world. A ruby red ale with little carbonation and a warm finish.

Amber and somewhat hazy with a creamy off-white head. Complex aroma with subtle notes of bananas, pears and sugar cookies. Full-bodied with a sweet, complex character. 3 years old and the hops have really mellowed. Delicious.

Barwa rubinowa, klarowne. Piana opada do obrączki, piwo pięknie oblepia szkło. Zapach kokosowy, waniliowy, nie za wyraźny. W smaku doskonałe, 33,3% goryczka, 33,3% słodowość, 33,3% kwaskowość, świetnie zbilansowane.

Barley wine bastante bueno. Cuerpo medio. Poco gas. Tiene un aroma que tira a dulce, igual que el sabor que deja al final.

355ml bottle at abv 10% bought at HK Brewcraft in Central.

Looks: Translucent amber brown colour with bits of yeast particles; Less than one-quarter finger head and residual soapy white foam which fades in 15 seconds; Good good sticky lacing with zero carbonation.

Aroma: Fragrant and sweet Amber malt, with strong alcohol, moderate Brandy, strong plums, dark fruits, caramel, strong toffee, floral, sugar, earth, spices, yeast and light lemon.

Taste: Mid to strong sweet full Ale malt, with strong caramel, very strong sticky toffee, dark fruits, alcohol, fair liquorices, floral, sugar, spices, lemon, quite strong bitter hops and grass.

Body: Full body. Thick and smooth palate.

Mouth Feel: Rich Amber maltyness in a fairly oily but smooth background. Strong sweet sticky toffee up front with strong plums and assorted darks fruits. Very sweet but not cloying. Good floral with notable spices. lemon to round. Kinda simple but very nice!

Booze: At abv 10% it’s alcoholic but not abrasive, only slightly Brandy-like with very low knock-on. Excellent!

Hoppiness: Floral, earth, spices, and light lemon in nose, and the same but stronger in taste; Bitterness is quite strong for a lasting, close to high astringent sweet bitter malty finish.

Taste: Fairly dry. Sweet, boozy and bitter to mouth.

Comments: As Barley Wine, this one fits all the attributes as rich, smooth, toffee-ish, alcoholic, dark fruity and sweet. What’s more, it’s also finely tuned with moderate liquor-ish taste (much lesser than most Strong Belgian Ambree), nice sweetness, and smart spicy citrusy hoppiness. Very suitable for beginners of the style as well as tasters. A very nice sipper to have!

Turbid brown/red with creamy off white head. Really nice roasted malt and caramel aroma. Smooth taste with a lot of malt sweetness and a well balanced alcohol warm feeling. Very good barley wine.
