San Francisco’s celebrated Old Foghorn Ale has been virually handmade by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer, in one of the world’s smallest and most traditional breweries, since 1975. Our barleywine-style ale, the first of its kind in modern times in the United States, has a luscious depth of flavour that makes it ideal for sipping after dinner. It is made with top-fermenting yeast, fresh whole hops, and "first wort", the richest runnings of a thick all-malt mash. Old Foghorn is "dry hopped" in the classic ale tradition and aged in our cellars until it attains the perfect balance of malty sweetness, estery fruitiness, and exquisite hop character, for which it is known throughout the world. A ruby red ale with little carbonation and a warm finish.

March 27, 2015 - bottle from Blue Max. Brownish orange pour with some head that faded somewhat quickly. Aroma was malty, caramel, dark fruit and light hops. Sweet malt and fruit dominate the flavors with a mild dry bitter finish.

Bottle BBE: 12.2013 (Aged). Lightly chilled. Pours a cloudy copper scarlet with a moderate, almost greenish yellow head. Medium intensity aromas of cheese & onion, cat litter, chestnuts, almonds, sweet cherry and cranberry. A subtle red fruit, Christmas Pudding sweetness, swiftly followed by a heavy, blunt bitterness and sourness. Very full body with a thick, chewy texture. Low to medium carbonation and a touch of liquorice in the finish. Overall a delightful, sipping barley wine. Aging doesn’t do much to take the edge off its alcohol punch though.

Pours a dark red with a low head. Pretty viscous beer with aromas of caramel, sweet malt, sweet dark fruits, nuts and some slight fruity hoppiness hiding behind the big, bold malt aroma. Flavor has huge caramel, sweet malt, freshly toasted bread, toffee, slight milk chocolate and nuts. The american hops are even more in the background of the flavor. Delicious beer that i will most definitely purchase in the future.

Bottle 355ml, pours clear redish with white fast falling head. Aroma of candies, red fruits, flowers and honey with a hint of grapefruit and melon. The taste makes the first impression of being very sweet, but it’s underlined by some delicate bitterness and a refreshing sourness that remains long in the aftertaste. Alcohol is good hidden and it’a very good drinkable. Imo it could be a little less liqueury, but still it’s a very pleasant one.

Zekada (411) - Helsingborg, SWEDEN - MAR 8, 2015
Bottle from Systembolaget. Pours amber with a medium white and rich carbonation. Smell has some alcohol, malts, yeast and something that is reminding me of flowers or seeds. Taste is strong and full. Sweet malts, some caramel and syrup, though it could taste even more. Palate is oily and smooth. Overall a pretty nice beer, though it hasn’t anything over the ordinary to offer.
