COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco’s celebrated Old Foghorn Ale has been virually handmade by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer, in one of the world’s smallest and most traditional breweries, since 1975. Our barleywine-style ale, the first of its kind in modern times in the United States, has a luscious depth of flavour that makes it ideal for sipping after dinner. It is made with top-fermenting yeast, fresh whole hops, and "first wort", the richest runnings of a thick all-malt mash. Old Foghorn is "dry hopped" in the classic ale tradition and aged in our cellars until it attains the perfect balance of malty sweetness, estery fruitiness, and exquisite hop character, for which it is known throughout the world. A ruby red ale with little carbonation and a warm finish.

355ml bottle. Pours a hazy ruby colour with a medium, short lived, tan head that leaves spotty lacing. Sweet aroma of overripe fruit, caramel malt and alcohol. Sweet flavour of caramel malt, overripe fruit, brown sugar, light spice and warming alcohol with a dry, bitter, hoppy finish. Medium body with a thick, oily texture and soft carbonation. Pretty nice.

355ml bottle into an ’Arrogant Bastard Ale’ glass at home on 6th March 2016. Lightly tanned foam blanket sat on top of a deep red body. Malty nose and front, sweet molasses rule this beer although there is a distinct hop twang to the brew as well. Most enjoyable, my sweet tooth liking this very much. Rich, deep, wine like depth to the body and texture, pleased I managed to try it at last (been looking for some time).

12 ounce bottle poured into a tulip glass. The beer is a dark mahogany color with a thick head of beige foam. Strong retention. The aroma has nuts, molasses, fig, and raisin. Fairly sweet with a lot of dark fruit character going on. The molasses is near a horehound note. Some woody notes do come through as well. Thick mouthfeel with soft, subtle carbonation. Big body. Delicious beer.
