San Francisco’s celebrated Old Foghorn Ale has been virually handmade by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer, in one of the world’s smallest and most traditional breweries, since 1975. Our barleywine-style ale, the first of its kind in modern times in the United States, has a luscious depth of flavour that makes it ideal for sipping after dinner. It is made with top-fermenting yeast, fresh whole hops, and "first wort", the richest runnings of a thick all-malt mash. Old Foghorn is "dry hopped" in the classic ale tradition and aged in our cellars until it attains the perfect balance of malty sweetness, estery fruitiness, and exquisite hop character, for which it is known throughout the world. A ruby red ale with little carbonation and a warm finish.

Bardzo smaczny BW. Lekko piecze w podniebienie, co lubię. Bardzo aromatyczny: leśne owoce, słody, trochę chmielu, drewno. W smaku podobnie. Ciało gęste. W tej kategorii cenowej rewelacja.

Pours mahogany colour with an apology for a head. I couldn’t find a trace of american hops in the aroma but what I got instead was even better. A mixture of dried fruits, raisins, a gentle alcohol note. The taste is pretty much the same, the beer is sweet but not cloggy, warms up a bit but is not alcoholic. In fact, it puts me in mind of some belgian strong ales or quadruppels, the only exception is the absence of phenols. Pour me an another bottle please!

BOTTLE 12 OZ from Bov. 9,4% ABV. It’s got some citrus hops over solid malts, loads of dried fruit with mildly oxidized notes (apricot?) and a touch of alcohol that spices the thing up. The taste is mighty sweet, yet not sugary but rather fruity. The big balancing bitterness feels somewhat harsh and phenolic, but after a while it either mellows down or the palate gets used to it, but everything comes together in a perfect harmony. Great brew.

Dark brown/purple hue and nearly opaque with a negligible head. Robust aroma consisting of red grapes, cherries, blackberries, alcohol, malt, caramel, and slight vanilla. Full bodied and quite rich. Smooth and sweet combination of grapes, cherries, blackberries, caramel, vanilla, and alcohol with a sweet and mildly hoppy finish. Very nice.

Review based on the BJCP2015 guidelines (style 22C). Bottle 35.5 cl - Batch unknown. AROMA: slight floral and pine-like hop aroma, with a high malty presence with notes of caramelized malt, peppery alcohols and slight dried grapes. malt aroma more prominent than hops. APPEARANCE: reddish copper color with slight orange highlights and good clarity. medium ivory head with good retention. alcohol derived viscosity with lacing. TASTE: strong malty and sweet presence with notes of peppery alcohols, caramelized malt. low hop flavours with a floral character. medium-high bitterness with a semi-dry and bitter finish. PALATE: meidum-full body with a slight velvety texture and alcohol warmth. moderate carbonation. OVERALL: an american barleywine with less hop notes that advertised, maybe from long conditioning.

wonderful sweet fruit flavour with a sharper finish. Only problem is why many Anchor beers are so sugary..

335 ml bottle
Dark amber to deep ruby red clear beer with blonde head. Aroma has dark fruits, toffee sweetness and ripe fruity marmalade.. Flavor has raisin and toffee with some pine. Palate is full and foamy. Finish has quite strong bitterness. Aftertaste has raisin and syrupy sweetness, light saltiness, light licorice, some spiciness. A bit of alcohol. Especially nice aroma. Good refreshing slow-sipper. Not so far from dark Belgian Strong Ales.
