COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco’s celebrated Old Foghorn Ale has been virually handmade by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer, in one of the world’s smallest and most traditional breweries, since 1975. Our barleywine-style ale, the first of its kind in modern times in the United States, has a luscious depth of flavour that makes it ideal for sipping after dinner. It is made with top-fermenting yeast, fresh whole hops, and "first wort", the richest runnings of a thick all-malt mash. Old Foghorn is "dry hopped" in the classic ale tradition and aged in our cellars until it attains the perfect balance of malty sweetness, estery fruitiness, and exquisite hop character, for which it is known throughout the world. A ruby red ale with little carbonation and a warm finish.

UPDATED: APR 3, 2015 Aged 2012 vintage. Opened 2/17/2015. I bought this bottle in 2012 while living in Rockford, Illinois. Shortly after, I moved to Atlanta, and the bottle came with me. Shortly after that, I moved to Chicago, and the bottle came with me. There it sat for 2 years, until I moved to Christchurch, New Zealand, where the bottle came with me. And now, to celebrate the successful arrival of my cellar, I open one of my most well traveled beers. Pours a cloudy dark amber with little head. What’s there is tan and clings well to the glass. Certainly oxidized aroma. Caramels, toffee, and port wine. Flavor is of raisins, plums, and sour cherries all baked in a crumble with caramel drizzle. Bitterness balances the sweetness nicely. The chewy texture and lingering bitterness help slow you from drinking it too quickly. -------- 2011 bottle. Opened 4/2/2015. Aromas of molasses, salted caramels, and alcohol. No oxidation. Flavour opens with deep caramel richness and moves to taffy apples and raisins. Some light alcohol in the finish, but by no means strong. Full bodied and a lingering raisin finish. This one has held up significantly better than the 2012.

Flaska från SB. Mörkt dimmigt brun med lite beige skum. Doft av karamell och choklad. Liknande smaker men också inslag av kaffe och humle.

Pours a nice mahogany-brown with a finger of light-khaki head. Very malty bouquet with a thick, grainy and sweetish aroma jumping out of the glass. Caramel, roasted almonds, porridge, semi-dark bread and syrup. The palate is full bodied and semi-sweet with nice roasted malt notes, an almost floral character midway and a medium length finish with low bitterness. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Very nice thickness on the tongue. Nice head. Sweet and carmel with a light toffee burnt flavor. Head last and last. Thickness is what I would want. Overall a nice traditional barley wine. Like most anchor beers top notch.

Swaroga (1634) - Brussels, BELGIUM - FEB 10, 2015
A very solid brew. Creamy with a great balance between malty and hoppy. Strikes with easy to drink, creamy and light body. Oranges and toffee are the main aromas. Still more complex then that with candied fruits like anana, figs, mango and banana. Very enjoyable only think that might put off is the cough syrup aftertaste.

A great old school barley wine. Pours a ruby rouge with a burnished brown body with a thin, creamy off white head. A solid amount of carbonation in the body. The aroma is rich with tons of toffee and caramel malt notes as well as toasted bread and floral hop notes. A nice well balanced profile with lots of heavy malts and more reserved hop notes of light spice, citrus and perfume. A light hop bitterness with a moderate resinous finish. A moderate alcohol presence on the finish leaves a warmth that perfectly accommodates the thick, rich profile.

Bottle from Lisbeer, Portugal. Color is dark copper. Head is super persistent, white and thin to medium. Taste is medium sweet. Nicely balanced taste. Aroma is malty, hoppy, wood, chocolate. I’m usually not into barley wines, but this proves me I’m possibly wrong.

Slightly too bitter for me in the taste, but a nice aroma and nice looks on this beer. Never thought too much of this brewery but they were one of the first craft breweries exported into Sweden.
