COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco’s celebrated Old Foghorn Ale has been virually handmade by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer, in one of the world’s smallest and most traditional breweries, since 1975. Our barleywine-style ale, the first of its kind in modern times in the United States, has a luscious depth of flavour that makes it ideal for sipping after dinner. It is made with top-fermenting yeast, fresh whole hops, and "first wort", the richest runnings of a thick all-malt mash. Old Foghorn is "dry hopped" in the classic ale tradition and aged in our cellars until it attains the perfect balance of malty sweetness, estery fruitiness, and exquisite hop character, for which it is known throughout the world. A ruby red ale with little carbonation and a warm finish.

Draft. Clear red pour, nice finger of white head very little lacing to speak of. Aroma, sweet toffee, brown sugar, and hops. Taste, sweet sticky mouthfeel, nice bitterness from the hops, big sweet malty finish. Nice stuff.

Pours a clear dark amber color with ruby highlites with a moderate off white head and nice legs on the glass. Aroma of prunes, caramel, brown sugar, dark dried fruits, moderate pleasant alcohol. Taste is prunes, raisins and other dark dried fruits, caramel, caramelized brown sugar, molasses, light bread and complex pleasant alcohol on the finish with a nice steady warming. Full bodied and chewy, velvety texture, no harsh alcohol and a low carbonation. Rich and complex and very easy to drink.

This is a great year round barley wine. Smells of some seriously sweet malts and I love it. Taste is smooth with a little bitterness. Really good beer but I would deduct major points for Anchor’s ridiculous bottling code if I could.

Bottle. Pours a cloudy dark reddish amber color with a smallish tan head on it. Nose is hop-forward, which is unfortunate, since the hops smell old and past their prime, like an IPA that’s sat on the shelf for far too long. Taste is a little sweet with some caramel in there. Not actually a fan, as this didn’t seem to age well. And I just picked this up off the shelf.

A- Pours a deep amber color with a small fizzy head that fades quickly. S- Lots of dark fruit, fig, brown sugar, hints of apricot. T- Very fruity, apricot, prune, fig and brown sugar that moves into a very dry finish with a nice crisp, semi bitter finish. M- Medium to full bodied with a good amount of carbonation. D- This incredibly fruity and dry barleywine is very drinkable and not nearly as heavy as expected.

Pours brownish with a thin off-white head that dissipates quickly. Nose is dried fruit, raw sugar, and booze. Taste is well-balanced: quite sweet, but some nice lightly floral hop notes. Medium body, lively carbonation. A very tasty barley wine. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Drank from glass. Rich fruity berries tastes. Very sweet and thick. Not too hoppy mild bitterness.
