COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco’s celebrated Old Foghorn Ale has been virually handmade by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer, in one of the world’s smallest and most traditional breweries, since 1975. Our barleywine-style ale, the first of its kind in modern times in the United States, has a luscious depth of flavour that makes it ideal for sipping after dinner. It is made with top-fermenting yeast, fresh whole hops, and "first wort", the richest runnings of a thick all-malt mash. Old Foghorn is "dry hopped" in the classic ale tradition and aged in our cellars until it attains the perfect balance of malty sweetness, estery fruitiness, and exquisite hop character, for which it is known throughout the world. A ruby red ale with little carbonation and a warm finish.

Bottle @ home. Pours a cloudy deep red liquid with a medium tan head and nice lacing. Aroma is sweet and malty with caramel, toffee, dried red fruits, honey, perfume. Big mouth feel with a smooth texture, medium carbonation. Flavors include caramel, toffee, pleasant bitter spices & herbs, syrup, dark fruits. Lasting bitterness. Nice balance, not more, not less, a very good barley wine.

Flaska.

Bottle bought at Systembolaget Valbo. Even though I tried this one a few times it’s almost undrinkable. Very strong unpleasant taste of alcohol, hard carbonation and waaaay too bitter. Must be drunk to drink this kind of beers.

Lexington,KY https://twitter.com/MaekJuBot

Reddish brown colour with no head. Aroma of fruits, some herbs, oak and yeasts. Flavour is very malty, sweet with fruity notes and with little carbonation. Alcohol is very well hidden. A surprisedly very good beer.

Best in this beer is definitely aroma. Deep, thick, sweet malty aroma, with delicate alcoholic graze. Very good solid barley wine.

Barley Wine er ikke helt min favorittype. Rødbrun i fargen med bra luftig skum. Lukter noe fruktig og alkohol. Smaker litt besk og søtlig. Medium med kullsyre. Litt tørr bitter avslutning.

March 27, 2015 - bottle from Blue Max. Brownish orange pour with some head that faded somewhat quickly. Aroma was malty, caramel, dark fruit and light hops. Sweet malt and fruit dominate the flavors with a mild dry bitter finish.

Bottle BBE: 12.2013 (Aged). Lightly chilled. Pours a cloudy copper scarlet with a moderate, almost greenish yellow head. Medium intensity aromas of cheese & onion, cat litter, chestnuts, almonds, sweet cherry and cranberry. A subtle red fruit, Christmas Pudding sweetness, swiftly followed by a heavy, blunt bitterness and sourness. Very full body with a thick, chewy texture. Low to medium carbonation and a touch of liquorice in the finish. Overall a delightful, sipping barley wine. Aging doesn’t do much to take the edge off its alcohol punch though.
