COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco’s celebrated Old Foghorn Ale has been virually handmade by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer, in one of the world’s smallest and most traditional breweries, since 1975. Our barleywine-style ale, the first of its kind in modern times in the United States, has a luscious depth of flavour that makes it ideal for sipping after dinner. It is made with top-fermenting yeast, fresh whole hops, and "first wort", the richest runnings of a thick all-malt mash. Old Foghorn is "dry hopped" in the classic ale tradition and aged in our cellars until it attains the perfect balance of malty sweetness, estery fruitiness, and exquisite hop character, for which it is known throughout the world. A ruby red ale with little carbonation and a warm finish.

"a little sweeter than some, but with a hoppier finish, it will leave you wanting more. this is one of the better barleywines out there. I remember thinking it was a little thin at first, but have since changed course. Great beer! 3/09 - on tap for the first time...not quite as good surprisingly, had to wait to drink as it was served ice cold. sweeter, but balanced."

Aw yeah. I’ve been wanting to try Old Foghorn since I saw Anchor’s cellar and heard our tour guide talk about the months required for this Barley Wine to mature into the rich malt bomb that it is. It did not disappoint. The reddish-brown color and frothy head made it easy on the eyes, and the flavors were equally approachable. Barley Wines can have robust personalities, but this one wasn’t overbearing at all. Caramel, brown sugar, hints of chocolate, booze, and candied dark fruits. The hops help to keep the flavors from becoming too heavy or cloying, but impart little bitterness. This is a full-bodied brew that would be right at home with a rich dessert or - better yet - a good cigar.

Bottle. A- Sweet, brown sugar, candy, roses, malty, caramel, dark fruits, booze. A- Reddish brown color, slightly hazy liquid, tan head. T- Sweet, brown sugar, rock candy, malty, dark fruits, alcohol. P- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, smooth finish. O- One of the sweeter barleywines I have had. The alcohol normally found in one was quite subdued. A nice blend of sugary and fruity flavors with the caramel like malts. A good sipper on a cold day.

330ml bottle poured in a Leffe chalice. A: Pours a beautiful deep reddish amber color with a large yellow head. Small retention but never disappears completely leaving some lacings left S: Sweet. Caramel, honey and candy. Sweet malts and liquor T: Sweet upfront, notes of caramel and toffee. Caramel malts and citrus and grassy hops, basically M: Heavy and extremely molasses body. Medium to low carbonation. Bitter-sweet aftertaste O: Good beer, Anchor Steam quality, but drinkability is compromised by the high ABV combined with its high sweetness [ BA Review @ 1/8/2012 ]

Roasted malt and molasses like aroma with a very rich, intense malt flavor and a moderate, well balanced hop presence. Very sweet but not cloying due to higher alcohol. Very long, sweet finish.

Fľaša. Tmavá medená farba, krémová pena, celkom držala. Vôňa vanilky, medu, tropického ovocia, jemne citrusov a najmä alkoholu. V chuti prevláda med s vanilkou, neskôr trošku citrusové plody, tropické ovocie. Trošku karamelu v dochuti. Plné telo, vyššia nasýtenosť. Výborné pitie.

A mahogany red beer with a small head. Aroma is awesome sweet malts and syrupy brown sugary tones, also with a large amount of alcohol when warming up. Piney hops too, quite light though. Taste is sweet malts, brown sugar, medium bitterness and mild alcohol. Rather pleasant. Smooth finish. I'd have another. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Malty and boozy. It's not as sweet as I expected. Not the best I've had, but a tasty little barley wine. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
