San Francisco’s celebrated Old Foghorn Ale has been virually handmade by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer, in one of the world’s smallest and most traditional breweries, since 1975. Our barleywine-style ale, the first of its kind in modern times in the United States, has a luscious depth of flavour that makes it ideal for sipping after dinner. It is made with top-fermenting yeast, fresh whole hops, and "first wort", the richest runnings of a thick all-malt mash. Old Foghorn is "dry hopped" in the classic ale tradition and aged in our cellars until it attains the perfect balance of malty sweetness, estery fruitiness, and exquisite hop character, for which it is known throughout the world. A ruby red ale with little carbonation and a warm finish.

This was a very good purchase from brewery I’d never tried. It reminds me of a Belgian Dubbel in some ways, but it could just be the style. Most barleywines I’ve had in the past were over-hopped (Three Floyds’ being the one that stands out). Very thin head that dissipates to nothing. The aroma is sweet; raisin, plum. Light bitterness on the finish. Thick mouth-feel, a little syrupy, but not in a bad way. I get a lot of plum upon tasting. Alcohol is detectable, but not distracting.

33cl bottle at home. Pours a mahogany colour with an off-white head which rapidly diminishes to a creamy layer. Aroma of candy sugar, caramel, prunes, alcohol, malt, plums. Taste is medium sweet, medium bitter with a warming finish. Notes of caramel, plums, candy sugar, coffee, cocoa beans, strawberry. Texture is syrupy, medium to full bodied with low carbonation.

Piwo bardzo ułożone.Klasyczny profil słodowy, przyjemne toffi w smaku. Nic tu nie wystaje. Po prostu pije się normalnie, bez zachwytu, ale z przyjemnością. Bardzo proste piwo. Chyba tak ma to wyglądać.

Clear deep amber with a nice steady dark tan head. Strong aroma of toffee, toast, dried fruits, spice, hints of chocolate and strawberry and resin. Strong sweetness is almost matched by bitterness and acidity. Body is lighter than expected, nice round alcoholic warmness. Very palatable. Dangerous!

355ml at the Head of Steam, Durham. Dark amber with virtually no head. Sharp aroma, almost vinegar-like, with a curious hint of tequila. Faint herbal flavour, with tannic and decayed floral notes; somewhat cloying.

Some fruits like dried apricot and plums. Taste is just a bitter-sweet mess! Second swing and a miss from Anchor for me.

Ruby colour, clear, almost no head, high (too high) carbonation. Vety weak aroma: some malty notes, cereal. Full body, heavy cloying sweetness, Flavour sweet malty, some dry fruits. Bit of alcohol on finish, but also nice hoppy bitterness and flavour.

UPDATED: JUL 3, 2016 Bottle. Almost no head but very strong carbonation, dark amber. Big malty, fruity, caramel and toast flavor, a bit alcoholic. Sweet and medium bitter. Maybe a bit too much bitter for me in that type (barleywine), but I think it?s classical for American Barleywine. But when it?s malty, I prefer it not too bitter.

Brownish pour with minimal head. Aroma is sweet dark fruit and some floral i did not expect in a barley wine. Taste followed nose less the floral. Minimal alcohol and not sticky at all.

Dark ruby color cleer beer, low tanned head. Very sweet, caramely aroma. Caramel, hint of red wine, toffe, molasses Taste: high sweet, light bitter. Caramel, hint of toffe, hint of wine, hint of something like iron? (again). Palate: medium body as for barley wine. Low carbonated. Not as sticky as I’m used to with barley wines. Well hidden alcohol. Overall: pretty classic barley wine. Good, but expected more.
