COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco’s celebrated Old Foghorn Ale has been virually handmade by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer, in one of the world’s smallest and most traditional breweries, since 1975. Our barleywine-style ale, the first of its kind in modern times in the United States, has a luscious depth of flavour that makes it ideal for sipping after dinner. It is made with top-fermenting yeast, fresh whole hops, and "first wort", the richest runnings of a thick all-malt mash. Old Foghorn is "dry hopped" in the classic ale tradition and aged in our cellars until it attains the perfect balance of malty sweetness, estery fruitiness, and exquisite hop character, for which it is known throughout the world. A ruby red ale with little carbonation and a warm finish.

Unknown vintage, but the bottle reads "10D" in a label box. Tasted side by side with a 2013 Bigfoot. Nice, rich amber color with plenty of eggshell head, just a hair darker than the BF. Aroma is deep caramel, sweet and boozy, less hoppy than the BF. Some dark cherry, sweet tea, and bourbon notes come out in the aroma as it warms. Taste is an excellent balance of malt and hops, with no spikes at all.

Deep amber to light brown colour with a clear body and a light brown, bubbly lacing on top for a head that ends up as more of a touch of foam around the edges.
Very hoppy initially with a lot more coming through than I expected despite the fact I knew before hand that the beer is dry hopped after fermentation. Strong and fruity aroma that is full of caramel malts, sugar, toffee and darker fruits. There is a touch of alcohol but not as much as I would have expected from the abv. on the bottle and there was some butterscotch and a touch of spice to round things off with.
Strong alcohol and sweet malt taste kicks things off along with some background caramel and some brown sugar. There is a lot of hops plus some prunes, figs berries and dates as well as some lighter fruit such as apricot and apple.
Sweet and with quite a bit of sugar, there is a lot of alcohol in the the beer that the smell only hinted at and the carbonation levels are low. The beer is full bodied and quite smooth with a spicy, warming finish.

Massive alcohol content, the beer was very complex in both smell and taste with plenty of sweet malts and fruits featuring. A lot more hoppy than I’d expected which was a big surprise and a most welcome one. One I’ll look to pick up again I think.

Bottle - red brownish beer with an off-white head. Complex aroma and flavour. Aroma has grapes, oak and some cardboard. Flavour is very sweet. High alcohol is hidden very well. Fruity. Oily. Low bitterness. Dry finish.

Bottle. Brown beer with hints of red. Small head and a little lacing. Aroma of malts and figs. Taste is sweet malts, sticky figs and dry hops. There is a alcohol warmth throughout. Quite sticky and full bodied on the palate. And the best bit, no carbonation. Not had many Barley Wines,so hard to compare to others.

Very tasty stuff. Apple, vanilla, apricot, orange. Very unique for a barley wine. Doesnt have that candied sugar but still pretty sweet.
