San Francisco’s celebrated Old Foghorn Ale has been virually handmade by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer, in one of the world’s smallest and most traditional breweries, since 1975. Our barleywine-style ale, the first of its kind in modern times in the United States, has a luscious depth of flavour that makes it ideal for sipping after dinner. It is made with top-fermenting yeast, fresh whole hops, and "first wort", the richest runnings of a thick all-malt mash. Old Foghorn is "dry hopped" in the classic ale tradition and aged in our cellars until it attains the perfect balance of malty sweetness, estery fruitiness, and exquisite hop character, for which it is known throughout the world. A ruby red ale with little carbonation and a warm finish.

Pours a hazy copper color with a one-finger beige head that quickly dissipates to a thin lace. Aroma is citrus hops with slight caramel. Flavors are complex, fruity. Up-front flavors are banana and raisin with biscuit, citrus, and caramel. Finish is malty sweet with the perfect hop balance and warmth from the high alcohol content. Surprisingly light on the palate with good carbonation. This is reminiscent of some Belgians. Overall, a little fruitier than I normally prefer, but very enjoyable. I’d definitely have this again.

Shared bottle. Pours is clear amber with thick persistent white head. Aroma of grapes, spruce, caramel, floral and sweet, barrique very promising. Taste is medium sweet, some bitter notes, carmel and grapes on tongue. Heavy body, oily texture, flat carbonation, light long bitter and heavy sweet finish. Overally bit sweet but awesome and well ballanced beer anyway. I’m not a big fan of anchor brewery but this one is superb.

Bottle. Pours a clear deep amber colour with a thin off white head. Aroma of molasses, toffee, fruitcake, a little liquorice, some raisin, slight prune, subtle orange, slight brown sugar, maybe whisky and spicy hops. Taste of molasses, toffee, fruitcake, raisin, some prune, slight brown sugar, whisky, a little vanilla, orange, liquorice and spicy hops. Full bodied and a sticky texture. A warming, spicy, toffee finish. An extremely complex, flavourful beer. Like a whisky or a brandy more than a beer. A gorgeous, warming barley wine overall.

Big frothy and beige head, slowly diminishing until it disappears. Clear reddish (ruby) dark amber. Complex, sweet aroma (candy sugar), very ripe fruit (apricot and citrus), spicy with some hoppynes. It tastes sweet (molasses), warm, ripe fruit (prune), toasted malt, wine wort and hoppy with a spicy and bitter fruityness finish. Medium carbonation. A very enjoyable discovery for me!
