COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco’s celebrated Old Foghorn Ale has been virually handmade by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer, in one of the world’s smallest and most traditional breweries, since 1975. Our barleywine-style ale, the first of its kind in modern times in the United States, has a luscious depth of flavour that makes it ideal for sipping after dinner. It is made with top-fermenting yeast, fresh whole hops, and "first wort", the richest runnings of a thick all-malt mash. Old Foghorn is "dry hopped" in the classic ale tradition and aged in our cellars until it attains the perfect balance of malty sweetness, estery fruitiness, and exquisite hop character, for which it is known throughout the world. A ruby red ale with little carbonation and a warm finish.

This has the typical Anchor flavor base but packed with extra flavors. Very sweet, creamy and malty. Toffee, honey, sugar, butterscotch, sweet rye bread and some fruitiness like plum, figs, raisin and pear. Has a light bitter in the finish. When the bitter mellows out there’s the sweetness again. Very full flavored tasteful beer. The only downside i can think of is that it might be a bit too sweet and could get a bit annoying as a session beer.

Bottle. Pours dark, cloudy orange. Smells of sweet caramel, malt, fruit. Sweet, heavy taste, medium bitterness. Very good and a well done barley. Enjoyable.

Dark red. Rich aroma and flavour, with malt, caramel, fruity esters and spicy hops. Full, sweet taste, and a dry finish with low bitterness and a bit of alcohol. Full and rounded body. Overall, a great barley wine. Beautiful, rich, tasty, harmonic, and very drinkable. Not cloying at all.

0.355 l bottle from ’REWE Budnik & Homberg’ at 9.4% abv, best before August 2016, presumably two years old. Clear, dark mahogany with a medium large, frothy, almost stable, beige head. Sweetish-malty, slightly fruity aroma of caramel, molasses, raisins, prunes and a touch of licorice. Very sweet, malty and moderately fruity taste of caramel, molasses, raisins, prunes, candied cherries, figs and some licorice, followed by a long, quite bitter, rather warming, pleasantly alcoholic finish. Medium body, slightly oily and a bit effervescent mouthfeel, average carbonation. Heavy, moreish and intense but quite well-balanced and tasty brew, maybe a bit too alcoholic. Should be a good winter warmer, and it held up very well in the cellar!

33cl bottle. Wow. Peaches, fresh apricots, caramel, vanilla, pears, watermelon, raisins. Pours a deep garnet with a frothy off white head. A full body with a sticky mouthfeel. Very smooth and complex. Top 5 for sure.

Thick dark amber brew... very short lasting off white/yellow head and almost no lacing. Aroma is toward the malt side of things .. caramel and toffee with only slight whiffs of citrusy hops. Dark malt flavors mingle well with caramel ... very light dried fruit and more hop flavor than the aroma. Mouthfeel is on the light side for West Coast Barlewines... Carbonation is light but everpresent.
