COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco’s celebrated Old Foghorn Ale has been virually handmade by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer, in one of the world’s smallest and most traditional breweries, since 1975. Our barleywine-style ale, the first of its kind in modern times in the United States, has a luscious depth of flavour that makes it ideal for sipping after dinner. It is made with top-fermenting yeast, fresh whole hops, and "first wort", the richest runnings of a thick all-malt mash. Old Foghorn is "dry hopped" in the classic ale tradition and aged in our cellars until it attains the perfect balance of malty sweetness, estery fruitiness, and exquisite hop character, for which it is known throughout the world. A ruby red ale with little carbonation and a warm finish.

This has the typical Anchor flavor base but packed with extra flavors. Very sweet, creamy and malty. Toffee, honey, sugar, butterscotch, sweet rye bread and some fruitiness like plum, figs, raisin and pear. Has a light bitter in the finish. When the bitter mellows out there’s the sweetness again. Very full flavored tasteful beer. The only downside i can think of is that it might be a bit too sweet and could get a bit annoying as a session beer.

12 oz bottle. Pours a deep reddish brown with full head. Aromas of brown sugar, raisin tarts, and sweet malts. Flavors carry the same plus light resins and grass. Alcohol is quite prominent in the finish, and somewhat thin for modern American barley wine, but nonetheless very nice.

Zapach z butelki: Intensywny, żywiczno-ananasowy. Piana: Dość skąpa, jasnobrązowa, drobno- i średniopęcherzykowa. Redukuje się do obręczy. Kolor: Ciemnobursztynowe, klarowne z zawieszonymi drobinkami. Zapach: Bardzo intensywny. Na pierwszym planie nuta cytrusowo-brzoskwiniowa, nuty żywiczne, zaraz potem biszkopt i toffi. Bardzo bogata gra aromatów, przeplatanie się. Słodowość, za chwilę chmiel, potem łagodne owocowe estry. Ciemniejsze słodowe nuty - rodzynki, delikatna nuta mlecznej czekolady. W miarę ogrzewania duża żywiczność, nuty tropikalne. Pojawiają się możliwe do wyróżnienia aromaty sosny, ananasa, lukrecji. Smak: Głęboki i złożony. Obfita podbudowa herbatnikowo-chlebowa z nutą suszonej śliwki. Owocowość świeżych śliwek i wiśni. Intensywna, korzenna słodycz w typie lukrecji. Spora ziołowość. Alkohol niewyczuwalny. Słodycz dominuje, choć odczuwalna jest delikatna kwaskowość jak w wiśniach wyjętych z nalewki. Tekstura: Ciało pełne, piwo dość ciężkie, nieco lepkie. Masywne i nieco oleiste, wykleja policzki i podniebienie.

355ml bottle, 10% alcohol on the label. Red/rubin colour with a thin beige head. Smell is ripe fruits, toffee, resin hops. Taste is fruity, maybe plum, caramel, sweet but well balanced with the hoppy final. Also liqueur notes. Oily texture, well bodied, and a nice alcohol warm just in the end, coming slowly. This is a beer to drink alone, before going to sleep. Really a very good beer.

Fruitige caramel aroma’s, prachtige kleur met weinig carbonatie. Doet licht bitter aan, vrij zoetig met nadruk op caramel. Blijft lang plakken in de afdronk. Zeer gevarieerd pallet.

Bottle 35,5cl. Clear reddish dark amber color, small creamy tan head, recedes after a while to a ring around the edge of the glass, minor lacing; intense aroma of sweet malts, dates, caramel, brown sugar, caramel, chocolate, alcohol, citrus; taste medium to heavy sweet, fruity notes, alcohol; full-bodied, creamy texture, sticky mouthfeel, flat carbonation; sweetness continues in finish also some mild bitterness, spicy accents (pepper, cloves), hint of wood. The alcohol is ever present but becomes never pushy, complex and special beer.

Caramel, raisin, brown sugar, booze, malts, some licorice, ripe (dark) fruits and spices. A powerful tasty brew!

One of the great classics among Anchor’s beers, with a creamy, beige head and warm, dark burgundy colour. Very complex and powerfully perfumed, delightful aroma of chocolate bar, cocoa powder, coffee with milk, candied dates, red berries, citrussy hops, caramel, ginger, pepper, cloves... Mellow sweet taste, very rich and deeply chocolatey malty, lovely powdery mouthfeel, very complex with all kinds of fruity and spicy accents, woody finish with warming, very agreeable port-like alcohol which doesn’t become wry in any way and lots of herbal, gentle yet powerful American hoppiness. An absolute masterpiece I’ll never forget and must have again... and again. But more of an old ale than a true barley wine, if you ask me.
