COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco’s celebrated Old Foghorn Ale has been virually handmade by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer, in one of the world’s smallest and most traditional breweries, since 1975. Our barleywine-style ale, the first of its kind in modern times in the United States, has a luscious depth of flavour that makes it ideal for sipping after dinner. It is made with top-fermenting yeast, fresh whole hops, and "first wort", the richest runnings of a thick all-malt mash. Old Foghorn is "dry hopped" in the classic ale tradition and aged in our cellars until it attains the perfect balance of malty sweetness, estery fruitiness, and exquisite hop character, for which it is known throughout the world. A ruby red ale with little carbonation and a warm finish.

This is a great year round barley wine. Smells of some seriously sweet malts and I love it. Taste is smooth with a little bitterness. Really good beer but I would deduct major points for Anchor’s ridiculous bottling code if I could.

Bottle 35,5cl. Clear reddish dark amber color, small creamy tan head, recedes after a while to a ring around the edge of the glass, minor lacing; intense aroma of sweet malts, dates, caramel, brown sugar, caramel, chocolate, alcohol, citrus; taste medium to heavy sweet, fruity notes, alcohol; full-bodied, creamy texture, sticky mouthfeel, flat carbonation; sweetness continues in finish also some mild bitterness, spicy accents (pepper, cloves), hint of wood. The alcohol is ever present but becomes never pushy, complex and special beer.

355ml bottle at home. Clear reddish brown with a medium slightly off-white soapy head. Full body with light to moderate carbonation. Quite sweet with warming alcohol and some bitter tones. Caramel, raisin, brown sugar, booze, malts, some licorice, ripe (dark) fruits and spices. A powerful tasty brew!

One of the great classics among Anchor’s beers, with a creamy, beige head and warm, dark burgundy colour. Very complex and powerfully perfumed, delightful aroma of chocolate bar, cocoa powder, coffee with milk, candied dates, red berries, citrussy hops, caramel, ginger, pepper, cloves... Mellow sweet taste, very rich and deeply chocolatey malty, lovely powdery mouthfeel, very complex with all kinds of fruity and spicy accents, woody finish with warming, very agreeable port-like alcohol which doesn’t become wry in any way and lots of herbal, gentle yet powerful American hoppiness. An absolute masterpiece I’ll never forget and must have again... and again. But more of an old ale than a true barley wine, if you ask me.

Pours ruby-red with little no hop aroma. Just deep, drak cooked fruits, caramel, toffee, and estery fruitness. Huge middle palate of rich malt, finishing fruity and refreshing. Overall, an American style standard.

Draft at Brickskeller. Clear amber color. Aroma of caramel. Lots of residual sugar in the taste, with a slightly bitter finish. Too sweet.

Great Barleywine. One of my favorites. The malt is up front and makes itself known early. Love the head and it definitely makes me think of bread with a touch of spice. Great dark coloring. This is a buy every time I see it beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

35 cl bottle @ home. Pours dark reddish brown with an off-white head that leaves a little lacing. Aroma and flavour are caramel, toffee, dried fruits, spices, and alcohol - with a slightly alcoholic finish.

Bottle, labelled as 10% abv. Appearance- a fairly dark, murky reddy brown, fairly opaque, a one finger beige head which quickly disappears. Aroma- lots of toffee, sweet breadiness, malty, dark fruits, plums, dates, Christmas cake. Smells lovely. Taste- caramel, sweet brown sugar- very dessert-like. Boozy dark fruits, burnt sugar, almonds, cherry coke, gets sweeter (if that’s possible) as it warms, with hints of banana. Full mouthfeel, syrupy, long clinging malty and raisiny finish. This is great.
