DruncanVeasey (1737), No. 46, Leicestershire, Germany Apr 10, 2008 Raspberry jelly red with a beige collar collapsing to a slick. Nose sweet and caramelised with a sprinkle of aniseed and rich cakey marzipan. Liquorice, aniseed and more marzipan in the mouth, with a juicy strawberry-like sweetness and gentle bittering hops. Palate light and fruity, the alcohol restrained but warming. Shavings of almond. Unsticky, rich, lightly medicinal with spice, cherryish alcohol and esters, bready malt and yeast. A bit Belgian, a bit English. The slick, rounded, mellow Barley Wine I hoped Fuller’s Vintage would be.
Ober (403), Best, Netherlands Oct 12, 2008 A clear red/bruin colored ber, with a small beige head. The aroma is freas, dark caramel malts, some sweet. There are hops. Also fruits. The taste of light chocolate, with fruits like berries, raisans. A little bitte. Some coffee candy. The aftertaste is bittersweet. When the beer gets warmer, there is a little sherry/porto taste. SamGamgee (593), Santa Cruz, California, USA Oct 10, 2008 12oz bottle. Deep red-brown with a lasting head. Fruity, toffee, candy, jelly... nice aroma. Sweet, caramel, intense fruitiness, light hops, light bitterness This is really tasty, and much more drinkable than most barley wines that I’ve had. Full bodied, but not sticky or too chewy like some. Smooth to the max. malrubius (459), USA Oct 8, 2008 12 ounce bottle dated April 07 in pint glass. Reddish amber with ring head. Sweet cherry port aroma. Sweet brown sugar ripe cherry with medium bitterness. Medium-full body and low carbo. Nice sipper. I’ve loved this one for a long time, but now I prefer a more aromatic and hop flavored barleywine like Bigfoot or Old Ruffian. azlondon (501), Greater London, England Oct 8, 2008 Appearance: Dark brownish red. Very little head, tan.
Aroma: Sweet, caramel. Ripe fruit. Malt.
Taste: Smooth. Vinous fruit, malt. Sweet.
Info: 355ml bottle, 8/10-2008, 185/300, 200/500 DeadGuyFrank (345), http://westchesterbeer.com, USA Oct 7, 2008 Old Foghorn is first off, a great name for a barleywine. Second, Andy Musser from the Phils ol’ broadcasting team pours it at the Kennett Brewfest. Third, it is one of my favorite barleywines period, plenty of ripe fruit, malt backbone, but not port like. Super fantastic beer - highly recommended.
