COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco’s celebrated Old Foghorn Ale has been virually handmade by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer, in one of the world’s smallest and most traditional breweries, since 1975. Our barleywine-style ale, the first of its kind in modern times in the United States, has a luscious depth of flavour that makes it ideal for sipping after dinner. It is made with top-fermenting yeast, fresh whole hops, and "first wort", the richest runnings of a thick all-malt mash. Old Foghorn is "dry hopped" in the classic ale tradition and aged in our cellars until it attains the perfect balance of malty sweetness, estery fruitiness, and exquisite hop character, for which it is known throughout the world. A ruby red ale with little carbonation and a warm finish.

UPDATED: MAR 9, 2005 A very accessible barleywine for inexperienced beer drinkers. I love the cool little bottles. The body is a ruddy brown and has a small light colored head. The aroma is brandy, cherries and, of course, malt. The taste is honey, malt and cinnamon. Extremely drinkable. I could down a lot of this. A little light for a barleywine, but still excellent. Tried again after aging about a year. Still a very subtle version of the style. The sweetness has muted and you get a bit more dark cherries in the taste. Soft mouthfeel.

Turbid brown/red with creamy off white head. Really nice roasted malt and caramel aroma. Smooth taste with a lot of malt sweetness and a well balanced alcohol warm feeling. Very good barley wine.

355ml bottle. Clear dark red with two finger beige head. Aroma of pine cones, caramel, rich malts, toffee, grapefruit, citrus and slightly burnt brown sugar. Taste is warming with rich malts, caramel, dried fruits, faint pine and grapefruit, citrus and lightly roasted coffee. Medium yet incredibly smooth mouthfeel, light carbonation and filling slightly roasted caramel aftertaste.

Pours clear deep ruby with a small tight dark cream head fading to a film. Aroma of caramel, overripe apple and pear, dried berries, marzipan, a bit of fruitcake/nuts. Palate rather sweet with layers of caramel, candied apple, raisins and other dried berries, toasted nuts, Bristol Cream. Finish dries slightly with alcohol heat and a touch of bittering hops. Medium bodied, slick, quite soft carbonation. Drinks more in the English style compared to modern heavily hopped barley wines, it’s smooth and well balanced though not so punchy. Must have been quite something when first debuted though.

Flasche (355 cl) vom Bierzwerg.
