COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco’s celebrated Old Foghorn Ale has been virually handmade by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer, in one of the world’s smallest and most traditional breweries, since 1975. Our barleywine-style ale, the first of its kind in modern times in the United States, has a luscious depth of flavour that makes it ideal for sipping after dinner. It is made with top-fermenting yeast, fresh whole hops, and "first wort", the richest runnings of a thick all-malt mash. Old Foghorn is "dry hopped" in the classic ale tradition and aged in our cellars until it attains the perfect balance of malty sweetness, estery fruitiness, and exquisite hop character, for which it is known throughout the world. A ruby red ale with little carbonation and a warm finish.

UPDATED: NOV 5, 2007 Sampled from 2007 bottle. So here’s it goes with a younger version: Esters and a slightly sweet smell. Brown sherry color. Taste is not too strong; it’s actually lightly sweet. Mild hops, but a decent alcohol finish. Ratings: 6-4-7-3-13; total: 3.3.

Sampled from bottle, dated 2004. This tiny sample still had a big malty smell. Less hoppy than, say, a fresh Bigfoot. Some nice fruity esters offer suggestions of strawberry and honey. A nice, cleansing brew. Ratings: 8-3-8-5-16; total: 4.0.

Bottle one month past its drink-by date. L: a murky dark amber with a tan head. S: an upfront whiff of booze gives way to the most delicious plum, cherry and dark fruits, I’m instantly taken back to my grandma’s dense fruitcake. Yum. T: plenty of alcohol coming through, but I’m getting strong malt and fruit too. F: full-bodied and warms the mouth and throat. It seems to fluctuate, some sips are malty, some boozy. O: I get this better now than when I first tried it a few years back. Would go lovely by a fire on a winter’s evening.

Deep ruby red, with a medium tan lacing head. Sweet malts, dried fruit, lively carbonation... thick and rich, with a warming boozy finish. Nice.

Wygląda na to, że zbyt wiele oczekiwałem od tego piwa. Już sam aromat nieco przystopował moje zapędy. Old Foghorn owszem pachnie ładnie jednak mało intensywnie. W smaku przyjemne lecz nieco zbyt wytrawne.

355ml bottle from Systembolaget. Beautiful clear, deep brown, with a creamy tanned head. Sweet aromas, toffee, nuts, malt, pine. Fairly high carbonated, full body, thick, creamy mouthfeel. The taste is sweet and malty, caramel, bread, raisins, toffee, citrus peel, orange. Pleasant bitterness and some warming booze in the finish.

Bottle from SB 150613. Pours a clear mahoganny with a lasting beige head. Very heavy aroma with banana, dried dark fruits, molasses and malt. Sweet taste with malt, prunes, treacle and candy/foam bananas. Not much hoppiness really but a nice bitter aftertaste. An excellent sippin' ale. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
