COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco’s celebrated Old Foghorn Ale has been virually handmade by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer, in one of the world’s smallest and most traditional breweries, since 1975. Our barleywine-style ale, the first of its kind in modern times in the United States, has a luscious depth of flavour that makes it ideal for sipping after dinner. It is made with top-fermenting yeast, fresh whole hops, and "first wort", the richest runnings of a thick all-malt mash. Old Foghorn is "dry hopped" in the classic ale tradition and aged in our cellars until it attains the perfect balance of malty sweetness, estery fruitiness, and exquisite hop character, for which it is known throughout the world. A ruby red ale with little carbonation and a warm finish.

Overcarbonated. Nice reddish colour. Aroma of raisins and pears!? Taste is very similar. Not to sweet. Not to bitter.

Clear amber pour, small quick head. Nose is honey, soft fruit, roasted malt, and a stray hop cone or two. More sweet than bitter. Middle is toffee, apricots, honeydew, and alcohol. Finish is bittersweet warming.

Bottle at Cherry Reds Cafe. Reddish copper, mostly clear. Carbonation dissipates a bit quickly. Massive alcohol in the aroma, along with cough drop, caramel, nuts, some vegetable. Weird sort of burnt plastic bag smell (ok not that bad) that seems present in a few US ales (Anchor IPA & Founders Centennial). Taste is strong alcohol; everything else comes second. It is sweet with a bitter/sour hoppy aftertaste, but mostly all you get is the booze. It’s only 10% but I feel like my ears are bleeding. Having said all this, it’s actually not a bad beer per se, just intensely unsubtle.

Drucken ur Pensmugg. Underbart rödfärgad men tyvärr med dålig skumbildning. Kittlar läckert på tungspetsen. Dominerande söt smak av framförallt karamell. God men något slät.

Barwa ciemno miedziana z czerwonymi odcieniami. Piana średnia, szybko zanikająca co nie jest dziwne na tak mocnym piwie. Za to pięknie oblepia szkło. Piwo to prawdziwa bomba słodowa, niezwykle słodka, pełna i gęsta.

On tap at Craft, Calgary. Pours slightly hazy red with a tan head. Aroma is sea salt, caramel, and vanilla. Caramel up front with notes of spice and roasted malts. Grapefruit on the finish. Excellent barleywine!

#2000 Rating of this beer, yay! 355 ml. bottle @ home. Procured from ABC Beers. BBF 05/2016. Deep dark hazy amber, small lightly off-white head with great lacing. Smell is thick cooked apples, caramel nose, maple, deep cooked fruits, malty, light port, thick cloves,… yummy. Taste is earthly hops, caramel, light leaves, cloves, cooked deep apples, first time hops make sense to me in a Barley wine, apple peel, caramel malts, smallest touch of warming work,… lightly warming. Body is substantial, malty & hoppy but not overtly thick or heavy. Earthly bitter hops. Wonderful earthly & autumn leave notes. Brekle’s Brown, Porter & Steam Beer were honestly let-downs for me but this was extremely impressive to spectacular.

Not my favorite. Well balanced. It has a red look and a nice finish. Fresh whole hops and the richest runnings of a thick all-malt mash. Has a nice warm finish.

A very good barleywine. Pours a beautiful bright red with a tan head. Smells of vanilla and salted caramel. Taste is malty, with vanilla, caramel and sea salt. Very refreshing and tasty. Had in the bottle.

Deep amber to ruby, off white head which is not very long lasting. Wonderful aroma of a fruit salad covered with candied sugar. Taste is sweet caramel and toffee, candy sugar, candied fruit, dark fruit allround, spices, light bitterness in the finish. Full bodied and sticky.

355ml brown bottle. Orange, clear, thin layer of beige head with minimal lacing. Nose has fruit, citrus, toffee and brown sugar. Taste has toffee malts, brown sugar, orange. Finishes bitter, bit of alcohol. Hops in the aftertaste with some rich malts. Very nice.
