COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco’s celebrated Old Foghorn Ale has been virually handmade by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer, in one of the world’s smallest and most traditional breweries, since 1975. Our barleywine-style ale, the first of its kind in modern times in the United States, has a luscious depth of flavour that makes it ideal for sipping after dinner. It is made with top-fermenting yeast, fresh whole hops, and "first wort", the richest runnings of a thick all-malt mash. Old Foghorn is "dry hopped" in the classic ale tradition and aged in our cellars until it attains the perfect balance of malty sweetness, estery fruitiness, and exquisite hop character, for which it is known throughout the world. A ruby red ale with little carbonation and a warm finish.

12 oz bottle, bottled November 23, 2012. Pretty fresh for Anchor in my area (unless this is a 2002 bottle, which I wouldn’t doubt!). ABV is 9.4%. Pours cloudy orange-brown with a medium beige head with decent retention. Aroma consists of caramel, licorice, dark overripe fruit...booziness almost burns the nostrils. Taste is malty sweet and alcoholic; some bitterness settles in mid-sip. Has a strong licorice flavor. Mouthfeel is oily, carbonation moderate, body full. Bottom line: traditional, yet extremely flavorful barleywines are no longer my thing. I used to appreciate them quite a bit. I admire this beer as a pioneer, but lately my barleywine tastes have shifted towards those that don’t exhibit (just) classic barleywine flavors--Hair of the Dog Fred, Dogfish Immort Ale, Brewdog/Three Floyds Bitch Please, etc.

Bottle from Erzbierschof Zurich. Brown-redish, muddy color. Beige head. Smell of sweet malts, dark fruits, liquorice. Taste is slightly metallic, dark berries, sweet, malty, plums, boozy. Definitely a lot of alcohol. Good beer.

Drink cold: 8-10°C Eye: pours a murky amber to ruby color with a rather quickly dissipating beige head and medium carbonation. Nose: fruity licorice. Prunes and red grapes and different berries. Almost a bit belgian style like; caramel and/or maple-syrup Mouth: a hint of carbonation, foamy and a bit metallic and a potpurri of fruits/berries (fruitcake or tarte) Palate: yeasty, sweet licorice, sweets, nuts, cranberry and pomegranate Overall: plus: very drinkable and as enjoyable as a belgian beer; downside: a bit metallic or alcoholic in the taste.

Amber, moderate head. Nose of syrup, resin, grass. Medium to full body. Sweet taste of roasted malt, a bit of booze, winy, light bitterness along. Well balanced. Nice brew.

Poured from the 6-pack, look is reddish orange nice 2-3 finger collar. The first beer and a half are forced sippers, meaning it is almost impossible to gulp, but after that all bets are off. I got all kinds of different flavors in every drink: fresh fruit, dried fruit, sugar, booze, malt and some hops. I also get why the commercial description suggests to sip after dinner, because it’s strong! I wouldn’t suggest trying to drink all 6 if you have anything to do the next day, especially early in the morning.

Bottle. Pours Reddish Amber with a very small, beige head. Aroma of malt soup. Notes of stone fruit and booze. Lots going on in the taste. Plummy fruit, liquor and a bit of doughy cake flavour. Gets you pished n’aw. Tidy.

Orange-red with thin beige head. A bit hazy. Wood, fruit, alcohol, apricots, chocolate, hops and a bit of liquorice in the nose. Bitter and fresh flavour with notes of fruit, vanilla and chocolate. Somewhat sweet with a dry finish.

A really beautiful reddish brown ale with light foam. Even when the bottle is opened spreads a lovely winey aroma. There is much fruit in the aroma and slightly malt. The palate is marked by hard roasted malt and lots of fruit. The alcohol has a nice warming effect and edge makes a good vinous fullness. The finish is long and the hops gives it a subtle bitter touch which is in a very good balance with the malty and fruity taste.

Grumligt orange/mörkbrun med kvarhållande beigt skum. Doftar sött, lite kanel och kryddor. Smaken omedelbart sötsyrlig, maltig med lite beska i botten. Eftersmaken ganska lång: lite sötsliskig, mycket tung maltsmak. Klart bästa Barley wine jag druckit.
