COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco’s celebrated Old Foghorn Ale has been virually handmade by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer, in one of the world’s smallest and most traditional breweries, since 1975. Our barleywine-style ale, the first of its kind in modern times in the United States, has a luscious depth of flavour that makes it ideal for sipping after dinner. It is made with top-fermenting yeast, fresh whole hops, and "first wort", the richest runnings of a thick all-malt mash. Old Foghorn is "dry hopped" in the classic ale tradition and aged in our cellars until it attains the perfect balance of malty sweetness, estery fruitiness, and exquisite hop character, for which it is known throughout the world. A ruby red ale with little carbonation and a warm finish.

12 oz bottle, bottled November 23, 2012. Pretty fresh for Anchor in my area (unless this is a 2002 bottle, which I wouldn’t doubt!). ABV is 9.4%. Pours cloudy orange-brown with a medium beige head with decent retention. Aroma consists of caramel, licorice, dark overripe fruit...booziness almost burns the nostrils. Taste is malty sweet and alcoholic; some bitterness settles in mid-sip. Has a strong licorice flavor. Mouthfeel is oily, carbonation moderate, body full. Bottom line: traditional, yet extremely flavorful barleywines are no longer my thing. I used to appreciate them quite a bit. I admire this beer as a pioneer, but lately my barleywine tastes have shifted towards those that don’t exhibit (just) classic barleywine flavors--Hair of the Dog Fred, Dogfish Immort Ale, Brewdog/Three Floyds Bitch Please, etc.

Det här var gott, lite spretigt kanske men gott. Smaken bar toner av päron, kåda och krydda. Kroppen var stabil men balansen satt inte helt på sin plats.

Bra balans i smaken, lite dovare i aromen. Lite torrare och inte så fruktig. Traditionell öl.

355 cl systembolaget. Fantastisk god öl som avnjöts tillsammans med ett lättare julbord dagen innan julafton.

Huge sweetness, like absolute epic raisin, plum and figs. Huge malty syrupy sweetness. The color is what gets me, its a really beautiful dark red, mahogany. Taste is really nice. Big sweet dark fruits with a subtle hoppiness. For 8.8% you don’t really taste it, it’s well hidden but helps cut some of that maltiness down. I have only had a couple barley wines but this one is definitely the best of the ones I’ve had. I’m glad I tried it, it’s a very different style for me but around the holidays this is a great beer. Cheers

En trevlig upplevelse så här kvällen före jul. Intensiv smak, en aning tallbarr som ger en viss fräschör.

2 vintages, 2010 & 2014, very very different!

2010:

A – Very see through, extremely glowingly strong red colour, very faint disappearing head.

S – Caramel, nutty, browned butter, figs, apricot, huge aroma, kind of reminder to Tom Hardy’s.

T – Loads of caramel, with nutty burned noisette feel, very balanced, and not that sweet, lots of lighter fruits like dried apricot, peach and some fig.

M – Perfectly carbonated, and a bit more full than fresh.

O – 9/5/9/5/15 Total 4.3

2014:

A – Orange copper with a solid head.

S – A bit grapefruit, a bit caramel malt, bready, and quite nutty, loads of pale malt and light caramel.

T – Very easy going, nice malt backbone with some lighter caramel, hops are really quite present, floral grapefruit with some grassy bitterness.

M – A bit too carbonated and quite thin.

O – 7/4/7/3/14 Total 3.4

Age seems to do wonder with this one, was closer to a less hopped up Bigfoot fresh.

Hazy ruby red color, big off white head. Aroma of strawberries, malts and bubblegum. Taste of red fruits, malts and yeast. ABV is high but its not evident in taste or aroma. It has medium to full body but it’s very smooth and very easy to drink. It’s fruity, refreshing and I could drink a ton of it. Awesome.

Figs, raisins and some elusive fruit. And alcohol but not dominateing. Brilliant with figs and cheese.

Recently picked up a bottle at the local shop. Impressed by how versatile this one is. Dangerously drinkable. Aroma is berries, caramel, sweet malts and more. Appearance brown reddish with a small head. Taste is dominated by heavy sweet tones. Raisins, caramel, honey, all balanced out by some nice bitter hops in the finish.
