Fantastic aroma bursting with fruit, cloves and nutmeg. Flavor is spicey, a little light but a smooth malt character shines through. A very relaxing and enjoyable beer. Even though I would agree only one of these a night. Alcoholist (570), Peoria, Illinois, USA

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Aug 18, 2004 Pours very, very dark with a thinnish tan head. Nose is pear and apple, caramel, cinnamon, and some type of pepper, as well as nutmeg or allspice (Can’t tell). Flavor is heavy on malt with nice hops bite, more caramel, and cherry. Finish is coffee and chocolate, and nice hops. Lovely. obisbeer (558), Barcelona, Spain
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Aug 17, 2004 Deep dark with not much head. Aromas of nutmeg, cinamon, banana, and tutti-Frutti? Dry with a light airy sweetness, full bodied, w/chocolate/malty/hop finish. Very rich w/ flavors of cherry, banana which seem to linger forever. | 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Mar 4, 2004 Draft at RFD in DC. Spicy - pepper, coriander and maybe pesto hit me first but all disappeared when nutmeg assaulted the taste buds. Pretty smooth but a little too overwhelming for me to want too much of it or to rate it too highly. Perhaps just a little more balance. Brodie (540), Blowing Rock, North Carolina, USA
| 2.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 3/10 | 4/5 | 5/20 | Nov 14, 2003 This rating is going to be in sharp opposition to most of the other ratings for this beer. I did not like it at all. I actually sent it back, not because there was something wrong with it, just because I wasn't going to be able to finish it. My gripe is that the sample I had was completely over-powered by a black licorice aroma and flavor (which I don't like, obviously). Vanilla was the next spice/flavor, followed by a blend of other spices, possibly clove, ginger, and/or cinnamon. I had this beer fresh on tap, maybe it needs to age until Christmas to balance out. Anchor hasn’t disappointed me yet. Dark rich color and flavor, Hoppy, malty very nice beer!!! As I have said befor this isn’t exactly one of my favorite categories but when you drinka a good beer it doesn’t matter. This is a very good beer. Definitely a bottle I will always keep.
