Commercial Description:
This is our special ale from the brewers at Anchor. It is sold only from early November to mid-January. The Ale’s recipe is different every year, but the intent with which we offer it remains the same: joy and celebration of the newness of life. Since ancient times, trees have symbolized the winter solstice when the earth, with its seasons appears born anew.

Editor’s Note: due to the significant similarity in style and strength from year to year (despite potential differences in the exact spice blend), this beer is no longer separated by vintage.

12 oz. bottle, 2009. Pours an obsidian black with frothy beige / khaki head. Aroma of malt, caramel, bubblegum, smoke, butterscotch. Medium bodied. Taste is has slight bitterness, mimics aroma except roastier. Overall good, exactly what I wanted to be drinking tonight.

Reviewing the 2008 one year later in December of 2009. Aroma is fairly tame. A little roasty notes. First sip is malty then the spices kick in and then fade off. Gets better as it gets warmer.

2008 Bottle. Pours a dark brown color with a tan head. Nice spice aroma with a touch of hops and a hint of sweetness. Flavor of roasted malts and a mixture of spices (allspice, nutmeg, clove) with bit of chocolate and hop bitterness in the finish. The mouthfeel is a tad oily.

Pours a nice, rich orange with a pillowy off-white head. Lots and lots of juniper and nutmeg in the aroma. The first sip is like drinking a Christmas tree, and not necessarily in a good way. Mellows out a great deal from there, but still quite over-spiced, with an un-balanced coriander overtone. Might balance the spiciness with a higher alcohol content, but a bit too thin to qualify as a warmer. A decent session beer, but not really all that special.

2009 vintage, magnum sized bottle. Deep dark coloration. Somewhat fruity, spicy flavors. Not a big presence of hops here. This was good but not really outstanding.

2009 bottle. Deep dark brown in color. nice malty flavor. Can taste the nutmeg and it’s not to strong. lots of other soft spices. finish stays in the mouth for awhile. Good but not great.

2009 Bottle. This was my first of the Christmas Brew. I am already looking forward to next years, because this was a really good pour. It was a very deep black with a carmel color head, but if you hold it up to a light it is actually a very ruby red color. It has a full body. It is malty with a twist of spice. I would def. recommend.
