Commercial Description:
This is our special ale from the brewers at Anchor. It is sold only from early November to mid-January. The Ale’s recipe is different every year, but the intent with which we offer it remains the same: joy and celebration of the newness of life. Since ancient times, trees have symbolized the winter solstice when the earth, with its seasons appears born anew.

Editor’s Note: due to the significant similarity in style and strength from year to year (despite potential differences in the exact spice blend), this beer is no longer separated by vintage.

12 oz bottle from Bev4less. Pours a dark brown with amber highlights. The head is tan, big and rocky with decent retention and lacing. The Aroma was a bit moderate in strength with sweet and spicy nutmeg, earth and malts. The taste was complex with cloves, nutmeg, spruce, roasted malts and molasses. The finish was long and sticky. The mouthfeel started a touch thin but built to a pasty conclusion. Overall: A very unique ale, every sip reveals something different, but the spices were a bit much.

Dark, dark Brown pour, Huge frothy head took me by surprise. spicy, earthy aromas, hints of pumpkin. Thin palate is a little off putting, vegetable spice and earthy malt tones are interesting, the aftertaste is quite pleasant.

Dark pour. Taste is accompanied with a spicy taste. Might be ginger? Very prominent though.

355ml bottle from 2008, imported. Pours almost black with a fine white shortlived head. Cloves and nutmeg dominate the nose, with malt in the background, then a touch of port and something vegetably - pumpkin? Cloves again on the palate but now with peppery hop, a little ginger, and a little demerara sweetness too. The aftertaste has a slightly burnt caramel character with astringent bitterness and a touch more nutmeg. The spice thing is a bit overpowering.

Much more malt forward nose than in the past. Toffee and roasted pine nuts with mild spiced candy on the palate. The nutmeg seems to be much lee prominent.
